Letter, by R[oger ?] of Tynemouth [prior of St Leonard's Stamford ?], to W[illiam of Tanfield ? *] prior of Durham, having been informed by W. that Thomas of Blyborough, W's neif and formerly clerk of the earl of Lancaster, had sent to W. his two brothers with letters by the king, queen and others requesting a grant to Thomas's mother of one bovate from W's demesne in Blyborough claimed as leased to her by R's predecessors.
[The content of the letter, and in particular the mention of a lease by R's predecessors, indicate that the writer was prior of Stamford, and the only possible indentification is with Roger, who was commissioned as prior in October 1308 (Lincoln Register 2 f.23v), shortly after the appointment of William of Tanfield as prior of Durham; William resigned in June 1313.]

Assise to recognize whether Adam of Sharples, John le Vogher, John Aleynson, Adam fitz Aleyn, Roger fitz Richard, Roger le Foughler [Fowler], William le Foughler, Roger le Foughler and John son of William of Kellamergh disseised the prior of Durham of his free tenement in Lytham, the complaint being over 100 acres of pasture. Adam of Sharples appeared but not the others, but he answered for them, as their bailiff, that the tenement was only 40 acres of pasture and in Kellamergh not Lytham and that there had been no disseisin; he put himself on the assise, and likewise the prior. The jurors, Adam de Bradkyrke, Edmund of Haydock, Henry of Carleton, Thomas Travers, Adam of Singleton, Henry Bannaster, William of Whittingham, Adam of Brockholes, William of Edleston, Richard of Catterall, Thomas of Rigmaden and Edmund of Weddicar, stated that the tenement was a vacant piece of Eastholmker, in Lytham, not Kellamergh, that Richard son of Roger was seised of it in the time of King John and granted it in free alms to the monks of Durham, and that Richard of Claxton prior of Durham [1273-85] was seised of it, and his successors until disseised by force by Adam and all the others, with damage of five marks. The prior recovered his seisin and damages; Adam and the others to be taken, with Adam committed to prison.

f.170r-171r   2 Id. [12] December 2 Honorius [IV: 1286]
Cartulary copy of 4.1.Pap.25. Mandate, by Honorius [IV] pope, to the abbots of Fountains and Blanchland and the provincial prior of the Dominicans in England, to hear and decide the appeal by J[ohn le Romeyn] archbishop of York, having shown the jurisdiction of the vacant see of Durham to be known to belong to the archbishop of York by ancient, approved and hitherto peaceful custom, the prior and chapter of Durham having falsely asserted that William [Wickwane] archbishop of York usurped that jurisdiction, which they claimed, and obtained papal letters to the bishop of Dunkeld and the abbots of Alnwick and St Agatha's [Easby], the abbot of Alnwick having commissioned in his place the prior of Dryburgh, the sacrist of Kelso, Mr Robert Merley canon of Dunblane and Mr Baldred Bisset canon of Caithness, the abbot of Easby having refused to take cognizance of the case, Archbishop William having appealed to the pope and died, and Archbishop John being prepared to prosecute the appeal.
