Contents

This list contains volumes of transcripts. Transcriptions of a miscellaneous nature, including copies of royal charters, letters patent and a copy of the Rites of Durham. Apart from the first two items (54137 and 57144) which appear to have been written earlier, the rest of the transcripts appear to have been made in the 19th century, probably as part of the Church Commissioners' record keeping in their administration of the estate.

Coundon, Morton and each of the 13 messuages are to produce a good and able horse and horseman to serve on the borders or at war. The Saltmarsh tenants are to uphold the dikes and water works. The “Closse maisters” are to continue at Skelton.

Lease granted by Bishop Richard Barnes to Queen Elizabeth, 22 September 1586, for 80 years (rents listed separately), of the manor and mansion of Crayke (Yorkshire) with appurtenances in County Durham or York with all houses, mills, demesnes, woods, fishings, courts etc. the advowson, ecclesiastical jurisdiction and ground called the Shawes excepted, also the mansion house of Wheelhall, Yorkshire and demesnes and fishing there in the Ouse, the windmill etc. (Crayke and Wheelhall are already leased out) also New Close at Saltmarsh, also (at Howden) ground called Assell Crofts, Whyte Croft and Ings, Yorkshire; also Walkington woods, Howden fishery and ferry boat, Howden horse mill and the water way from the Ouse up to the stone bridge in Brigge gate, Howden. Lease passed to Sir Francis Walsingham 22 March 1588, then to John Thacker 10 December 1588, then leased by him to trustees for his son, 10 May 1607.

Volume in file form, bound in parchment. The description of this manuscript in The rites of Durham, ed. M. Harvey and L. Rollason (Surtees Society, 226: Boydell Press, 2020), p.4-6 identifies it as having belonged to Christopher Mickleton (1612-1669) with annotations by James Mickleton (1638-1693), making it more connected with the Mickleton and Spearman collection than the Church Commission material.
