Plan showing “Mr Claverings pretended bounderies”, the freeholds of Messrs. Wilkinson, Burton and Baker and the copyhold of Mr Whittingham.
Bishop Trevor and the Clavering family went to court about 1754 over the boundaries of Lanchester
Common. The names of Clavering, Baker, Wilkinson and Whittingham all figure on C.C. plan 48 [next item], marked “the Plaintiff's plan” and almost certainly relevant to the law suit of c. 1754. The name of Whittingham appears on C.C. plan 47
[previous item], dated 1757. A letter of James Clavering to his son George in 1740 (Surtees Soc. 178, p.226) mentions the Burtons, Bakers and Whittinghams in one sentence. This plan must date from about 1745 (not 1670 as endorsed), although it has
been annotated later.
