Accession details

The notitia books were deposited in 1981, and the maps and plans in November 1975 by the Church Commissioners.

Arrangement

The notitia books are arranged by ward.
The plans are stored by document size, and broadly arranged by property location. Many plans are in folders with cross references to other files on them. It may be possible to trace these references further.
Orientations are not always top, north, or even mentioned.
All plans are in manuscript unless specified as printed.
Some plans of proposed districts to be subject to Orders in Council, marked on 6″ O.S. plans, have been glued to folders hiding references.
Many flimsy yellow paper plans are mere outlines and give little more information than that for which they were designed.
Some of the notes on plan covers are misleading or refer to old numbering systems.

CCB MP/528  (7449)   c.1745
Plan showing “Mr Claverings pretended bounderies”, the freeholds of Messrs. Wilkinson, Burton and Baker and the copyhold of Mr Whittingham.
Bishop Trevor and the Clavering family went to court about 1754 over the boundaries of Lanchester Common. The names of Clavering, Baker, Wilkinson and Whittingham all figure on C.C. plan 48 [next item], marked “the Plaintiff's plan” and almost certainly relevant to the law suit of c. 1754. The name of Whittingham appears on C.C. plan 47 [previous item], dated 1757. A letter of James Clavering to his son George in 1740 (Surtees Soc. 178, p.226) mentions the Burtons, Bakers and Whittinghams in one sentence. This plan must date from about 1745 (not 1670 as endorsed), although it has been annotated later.
