Title: Church Commission Deposit of Durham Bishopric Estate Records: Rentals and Surveys
Dates of creation: 1647-1865
Extent: 19 boxes
Held by: Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections
Origination: documents arising from the administration of the estates of the bishops of Durham.
Language: English or Latin
As well as the rentals for property in the diocese of Durham and the peculiars of Allerton and Howden, this section of the deposit contains extensive mineral extraction information, and surveys carried out during the Commonwealth further to the
sequestration of the property of the bishop of Durham.
Deposited by the Church Commission February 1956.
Unit numbers in parentheses are those given to documents by the Church Commission. A letter has been added to each section (A - G) to distinguish the sequences of item numbers.
The boxes in which material is stored are given: it will be noticed that some are stored out of sequence, which is occasionally to accommodate oversize volumes, but most frequently because related material has been found elsewhere in what was a
very large and not entirely structured deposit.
Catalogues
The following catalogues are available for this collection:
The first group of handlists contains the material in the 1956 deposit that was removed from the main sequence and organised into generic groups:
The following (large) list contains about 10,000 items deposited in 1956 but not transferred into any of the above categories:

Durham Bishopric Estates material
There is a
schedule of the 1981 deposit, largely of property related documents.
