Material relating to parsonages and benefices within the Diocese of Durham

Accession details

Originally deposited in Durham County Record Office (DCRO) by the Church Commissioners, in 1970 and 1971. WIth their agreement, it was withdrawn from DCRO and deposited with the Durham University's Department of Palaeography and Diplomatic on 23 July 1981, so that it could be housed in the same repository as the Durham Diocesan Records. Further deposits (especially for sections B and C below) were anticipated by the Church Commissioners in March 1981, but have not been made. One bundle (DCRO ref EP/CC/1/8, Knarsdale, 1825-1829) had previously been transferred to Northumberland Record Office (accession reference NRO.1892, added to similar records as NRO.529/16).

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Sub-Librarian, Special Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

Arrangement

Previously listed in three series as below by Durham County Record Office (DCRO), under reference EP/CC. Plans (CCP/A) were listed by DCRO in a single sequence, EP/CC/1/1-20, but were re-arranged on deposit with Durham University into two series, one for County Durham archdeaconries, and the other for Northumberland archdeaconries, each sorted alphabetically by name of parish or chapelry concerned. Returns (CCP/C) were also rearranged on deposit into their current order.
Ignore “EP/CC” numbers written on documents, which reflect their previous arrangement by DCRO.

Durham Diocesan Records The Episcopal Administration section of the Durham Diocesan Records includes material relating to augmentations and to benefice income under series DDR/EA/BEM/1 and DDR/EA/BEI respectively. A few parsonage house plans can be found within series DDR/EA/PHM.
Records of the Parsonages (formerly Dilapidations) Board, including parsonage house plans, can be found under DDR/DA/DIL within the Diocesan Administration section of the same collection.

Plans and papers relating to parsonage houses disposed of by the Church Commissioners prior to 1971. Arranged with plans from Durham and Auckland archdeaconries first (CCP/A1), followed by plans from Lindisfarne and Northumberland archdeaconries (CCP/A2).
Some of the plans within this series are fragile and currently unfit for production.

Plan of estate at West Auckland between Humber Beck Lane and Town End Beck, purchased [by Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty] to augment curacies of Auckland St Andrew, Auckland St Anne and Escomb.

Returns of benefice income
Reference: CCP/C
Dates of creation: 1809-1830
Extent: 1 bundle
Returns by bishops of Durham to Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty (QAB) under acts of 5 Anne, 1 George I and 45 George III. Returns detail clear improved yearly value of benefices under the value of £150 per year, noting sources of income, augmentations from QAB and discharges from payment of first fruits and tenths. Also a few returns for chapelries under the value of £120 per year.
