Photochrom prints look like colour photographs but are ink-based images involving the photographic transfer of an original negative onto litho and chromographic printing plates, a process invented by Hans Jakob Schmid (1856–1924) for the Swiss firm Orell Füssli in the 1880s. It was a complex process requiring a separate stone for each colour, sometimes up to ten stones. Füssli published the prints through a company with the imprint Photochrom Zürich, later Photoglob Zürich. In the 1890s they also licensed the Detroit Photographic Company to make photochroms and their catalogue of 1901 clearly states the photochrom’s unique selling point: ‘the only successful means yet known of producing directly without the aid of hand color work a photograph in the colors of nature. The results combine the truthfulness of a photograph with the color and richness of an oil painting or the delicate tinting of the most exquisite water color. The colors are absolutely permanent and attain the virility and strength of nature so often lacking in hand colored work’ (http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/pgz/process.html). Large format British scenes in the photochrom process are scarce. Although the prints were popular with collectors the vast majority of views sold world-wide were in a much smaller size (typically around 6½ x 9 inches) and this grander scale was more often reserved for European and American landscapes.

57 scanned BW prints of buildings, streets and views in the centre of Durham, including the cathedral, views from the top of the tower, Palace Green, the Bailey, the Market Place, and South St. The images were taken by Guy Fursland when a 2nd year student on a Town and Country Planning 4 year diploma course at the Rennie Mackintosh School at Glasgow School of Art, sometime around Easter; 2 of the images include fellow students, 4 on the Baths Bridge and 3 on top of the cathedral tower.

Whitelands College Best Negatives The former Whitelands College buildings, including the chapel, were built by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1928-30 to accommodate the teacher training college, then under the headship of educationalist Winifred Mercier. The College was formerly based on King's Road, Chelsea. Scott incorporated stained glass and a reredos by William Morris and Company from the old college chapel at Chelsea in the design of the new building, which involved modifying the pointed arch glass to a round arch. In 2005 the stained glass and reredos were removed and re-sited in Parkstead House (formerly Manresa House), the new home of Whitelands College
