Gordon Robertson Berriman was born in 1917 and educated at Durham University, being a scholar of University College, and gaining a BA in 1940, a DipTh in 1941 and an MA in 1943. He also attended Lincoln Theological College in 1941 and was
ordained deacon in 1941 and priest in 1942 in Durham diocese. He was curate of Dawdon 1941-1944 and St Cuthbert Bensham Gateshead 1944-1947 before becoming vicar of Whitworth with Spennymoor 1947-1958 and then South Shields 1958-1975, in addition
being curate in charge of St Thomas Westoe South Shields 1958-1963 and vicar of Holy Trinity South Shields 1963-1975. He was also a surrogate 1949-1975, rural dean of Jarrow 1958-1975, Commissary George from 1961, proctor of the Convocation of
Durham 1964-1975, an honorary canon of Durham from 1965 and an honorary vicar choral of Durham from 1975.
Service papers and associated hymn sheets and sermons for services, some for standard services and some for special ones, and with a separate series for weddings, mostly conducted or attended by Canon Gordon Berriman, many in his parish of South
Shields, but also elsewhere.
Found in the Dormitory cupboards in Durham Cathedral Library March 2014. Transferred into custody of Durham University at 5 The College, July 2016 (accession Misc.2013/14:66)
