Registrar

The university first appointed a registrar in 1835 whose role was to record university appointments, admissions, degrees and distinctions. So they came to administer much of the core academic activity of the university.

Contents

This was a series of originally 9 metal deed boxes, stored (in 2004) in the basement of Old Shire Hall, the then administrative headquarters of the university. The boxes were used by past registrars as secure storage for some of their more significant papers concerning the governance and administration of the university.

Basement Deed Boxes
UND/CA
This was a series of 9 metal deed boxes, stored (in 2004) in the basement of Old Shire Hall which past registrars seemed to have used as secure storage for some of their more significant papers concerning the governance and administration of the university. The fact that this does not really seem to represent the administrative papers of the university pre-1937 is perhaps to be explained by the rumour that much of the paperwork for this period went for salvage during WW2. It had perhaps by then been deemed to be surplus to requirements as being paperwork of the old regime which had been rather swept away in 1937. The new regime had had time to establish itself by then and no longer needed to refer back to previous documentation which was thus disposed of in the War.
An exhibition in the University Library in March 1982 made use of:
CA1/1-8, 11, 12, 14-18, 20-22, 24-28, 30; CA2/2, 9, 14, 15; CA3/10; CA4/2, 5, 8, 10, 21, 30; CA5/12, 14, 22, 23; CA6/4; CA7/1-3; CA8/2, 3, 7, 10.

Durham University students' degree parchments. These were degree certificates, generally for pass degrees, which were returned by students to be replaced by new ones as they had added further subjects to their degree. Occasionally the parchments are endorsed with the details of the new award and occasionally there is also supporting correspondence. The parchments are organised by college, with the great majority being for King's College where a number of the students added further disciplines to their BSc degrees. These certificates were on parchment until 1958 when paper was introduced. There is also a quantity of blank certificates for all types of degrees and certificates, including honorary degrees.
