Composite manuscript codex made up of three parts: (A) f.3-97 Geoffrey of Trani, Summa super titulis Decretalium; (B) f.98-101 Tabula, and (C) f.102-147 Raymond de Peñafort, Summa de penitentiae casibus; De matrimonio, plus flyleaves and endleaf written at the turn of the 13th/14th centuries. (A) and (C) had certainly been brought together by 1392 as they are recorded in the 1392 Spendement Catalogue.
Modern pencil foliation, includes two front endleaves and duplicates 54.
Standard Tuckett binding, mid 19th century full brown calf over thick wooden boards (Charles Tuckett, binder to the British Museum, rebound many Durham manuscripts in the 19th century), replacing a Waghorn binding of 1727. f.1r preserves traces from the turnovers of an earlier binding.
Inscription: “‘liber fratris Roberti de Haliden Monachi dunelm′ ecclesie”, earlier 14th century, f.2v, top. Robert of Hallington, monk of Durham approximately 1330-49.
Pressmark: “Y.” twice (both over an erasure), late 14th century; “Summa Godefridi”, early 15th century; “De communi libraria Monachorum dunelm′ In le Spendement”, early 15th century, all f.3r, top. Recorded in 1392 Spendement catalogue.
Parchment: thin, modest quality with noticeable distinction between H and F sides, follicle marks, some edgecuts. Arranged FH, HF. Strip cut off lower margin of 56.
Flyleaves (f.1-2)2, I-VIII12
Text-block: 268 x 165 mm. Two columns (width, 77 mm).
Lines: 77 (space, 3.5+ mm; height of minims, 1.5+ mm).
Pricking: awl and knife (intermittently preserved in upper and lower margins only).
Ruling: ink. Single verticals flank columns (two in total in the intercolumnar space).
Written in Textualis rotunda; ascenders in the top lines often calligraphically extended. Seemingly one scribe, also responsible for rubrics within the text-block and probably also for the many rubrics and corrections in the margins done in a less formal, more cursive script. A couple of corrections within the text and the margins are written in a more laterally-compressed script and using darker ink possibly by the same scribe.
Preface, and the start of each Book are headed by a red and blue initial, 6+ lines high, flourished in both colours. Sections headed by 4-line-high initials, alternately blue flourished in red then vice versa. Subdivisions marked by paraphs, alternately red then blue. The first letter thereafter and the first of many sentences are stroked in yellow. A faint, much-rubbed preliminary sketch on 71r and a clearer but unfinished one on 72r for consanguinity and affinity diagrams.
Occasional faces drawn alongside text-block on, e.g., f.4v, 29v, 36v, 41v, 52v, 59v, 69v, 77v; also once as part of marginal rubric. Small contemporary sketch of a feline on f.83v, margin.
Written in Italy or S. France, 13th/14th century.

Long addition occupying the lower margins of f.94v-95r: Glosa domini Innocencii super illa decreta. Verse colophon is in the same script and hand as the main text which it immediately follows. Extensive marginalia (often rubrics, sometimes Notas, numbering of points, etc.) contemporary with the main text. Running headings: ‘L’ on versos, book number on rectos

First initial of each alphabetical group is 3 lines high, alternately blue flourished in red then vice versa; each subsequent entry is headed by a 1-line-high initial, alternately red then blue.

Alphabetical. Set out in three columns per page, with a wide space for the entries followed by narrow spaces for the book, title, and paragraph numbers, plus a text-column reference letter. As DCL MS B.I.29 (though the references sometimes divergent). f.101v blank.
Parchment: low quality with pronounced H/F contrast, numerous holes and imperfections. Arranged FH, HF. The bottom 15-96 mm of every leaf of the original book (102-143) is a restoration strip glued into place (the continuation of the rulings onto these strips indicates that they were added at an early date).

Ruling: ink. Single verticals flank both columns (three in total in the intercolumnar space). A further pair of verticals in the inner and the outer margins. First two and last two horizontals generally extended; two further pairs of horizontals in the lower margin.

(e) is in at least three hands: 1 responsible for item1; 2 for items 2-16 and 18; 3 for item17 (hand 2 also contributed additions to f.127v, f.138v, and f.141v).
Book IV is headed by a red and blue initial, 5+ lines high, flourished in both colours. The Preface and Incipits to Book I are headed by 3+-line-high blue initials, flourished in red; a large blue paraph flourished in red braces the capitula list for Book I, a red one braces that for Book III (none for Book II). Books II and III and all chapters are headed by 2+-line-high initials, alternately blue flourished in red then vice versa, the flourishing rudimentary. In Books I-III red paraphs mark subsections, and sentence capitals are stroked in red. In Book IV the paraphs are alternately red then blue; sentence capitals are plain.

The Summa de matrimonio was added (as Book IV) as an early supplement, starting on the blank leaves at the end of quire V (f.142r-143), continuing on the final short quire, the line count of whose last folio (f.147) was extended to accommodate the end of the text. Book numbers given as running headings in red and blue capitals (“L” on versos, Roman numeral on rectos); titulus numbers given in arabic numerals both in red and in black in the upper and side margins; section numbers in red in Arabic numerals in the side margins. Numerous ?notes written in the lower margins by the original scribe have been erased. Annotations in several early hands including (f.138v, lower margin) an itemisation of “xii abusiones: sapiens absque operibus bonis, senex sine religione ...populus sine lege” and “[xii] vicia capitalia: sacrilegium, homicidium, adulterium, fornicacio ... computantur” the latter set said to be secundum Bedam. Main text also in DCL MSS A.IV.29 and B.I.29.
13th/14th century additions to endleaf. 18 items - the itemization follows the subdivisions indicated (generally by paraphs) in the manuscript itself.
