About the creator

John Joseph Hornyold was born in 1706. He was educated at Douai College and, following ordination, returned to England to serve as a missionary at Grantham. In 1739 he was appointed as chaplain to Longbirch near Wolverhampton. Five years later he published his first work, The Decalogue Explained, and subsequently published several theological works on the sacraments and the creed. In 1751 he was appointed coadjutor to John Talbot Stonor, Vicar-Apostolic of the Midland District; he succeeded him five years later. In 1768 he took on the responsibility of the running of Sedgley Park School which had been founded by Bishop Challoner six years earlier. He died at Longbirch shortly after the passing of the first Catholic Relief Act in 1778.
