Manuscript sermons by Bishop Lightfoot, some with corrections or substantial revisions, most in the form of octavo-sized booklets with paper covers. Preaching details are noted inside the front cover, and include each date and place where the sermons were preached, sometimes also the occasion that was being celebrated at the service concerned (e.g. the rebuilding or dedication of a church). Within the detailed list below, this information is recorded as a range of years and list of places, without further detail
The sermons are arranged in approximate date order of first preaching. Some runs of previous numbers noted on the sermons are recorded within the detailed list, but other numbering schemes appear to have been used for scattered items only, and are not noted here. Most of the sermons are more briefly listed within Geoffrey R. Treloar, Lightfoot the historian: the nature and role of history in the life and thought of J.B. Lightfoot (1828-1889) as churchman and scholar (Tübingen, ca.1998) at p.395-403, and the reference numbers used within this list will be noted in the Local Collection copy of that work

Letters received by Joseph Barber Lightfoot from throughout his adult life. These include significant quantities from E.H. Browne 1861-1883 (37 items), R.W. Church 1867-1889 (37 items), F.W. Farrar 1857-1886 (33 items), F.J. Hort 1856-1889 (40 items), H.P. Liddon 1870-1889 (62 items), A.P. Stanley 1856-1881 (68 items), A.C. Tait 1862-1881 (35 items), and B.F. Westcott 1850-1889 (227 items), along with letters to him in his roles as Lady Margaret Professor and editor of the Dictionary of Christian Biography.
Arranged in yearly bundles (each bundle arranged A-Z by correspondent, as listed). A system of complex numbers written on the letters suggests a previous arrangement, by correspondent or subject rather than in the current yearly bundles: these numbers are recorded within the list following and can be combined with the 'CJBL/Bxxx' bundle reference for a full reference number. Some letters which had not been numbered have been given 'X' numbers within the list.
Many of the correspondents have been identified with reference to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Crockford's Clerical Directory or J.A. Venn, Alumni cantabrigienses: where so identified, names have been expanded and index terms added here.
