Parchment strip from a 15th century manuscript commentary on the Psalms, re-used in a binding as a hinge strip.
Parchment
No pricking visible. No ruling discernible. 10 lines occupy 50 mm.
Written in hybrida, expertly, with the Biblical text underlined in red.
Written in Low Countries, 15th century.
Back hinge strip in Shelfmark of source: Routh LIII.D.1 - Martin Luther, Supputatio annorum mundi (Vuittembergae: apud Georgium Rhau, Anno, 1545), and four other works, bound in calf, covers with blind central stamp (very similar to Ker, Pastedowns, no. i and also no. vi, used in Oxford c. 1565-1620), and remains of ties/clasps, late 16th century. The parchment front hinge strip of this volume, was described as Fragments Portfolio I/21b - largely blank - although it was not to be found there and seems to be still in the book as front hinge strip. The volume has 17th/18th century ownership inscriptions: “Joh: Newell Libr” and “Thomas Bentham”.
One piece from the upper inner corner of a leaf, containing part of the commentary is on Ps. xli:6 and 10-11.
