Ian Thomas Ramsey was born in Kearsley, Lancashire, the son of Arthur Ramsey, a postmaster, and his wife May Cornthwaite. He was educated at Farnsworth Grammar School and then Christ's College Cambridge, studying mathematics and moral sciences.
He maintained these interests throughout his life, but a battle against tuberculosis whilst a student encouraged an interest in theology which he also took at Christ's. Ordained at Ripon Hall, Oxford, he became a curate at Headington Quarry Oxford,
before returning to Christ's in 1943 as chaplain and tutor, and director of studies in theology and moral sciences. He was given the Nolloth chair in philosophy of the Christian religion at Oxford in 1951 along with a fellowship at Oriel College.
Busy in the life of the college, he also became involved in university administration in the divinity faculty and outside the university as chairman of the Warneford and Park hospitals management committee from 1954. He directed the Lambeth diploma
in theology for part-time students outside Oxford from 1964 whilst publications flowed, especially
Religious Language (1957) and
Freedom and Immortality (1960). He argued for the importance of religious worship and belief, and of the demand of the conscience acknowledged in ethics.
Many of his essays were collected posthumously in
Christian Empiricism (1974).
His academic career, and its path towards constructing a convincing system of modern metaphysics, was curtailed in 1966 when he was appointed bishop of Durham. His Lancastrian origin and accent, his unprelatical approachability, and his
friendliness gained him the affection and respect of miners, students, clergy and all his wider flock. He was not afraid of controversy, of criticising the government or of taking a lead in expressing the Church's reactions to the moral problems of
the day. He was in demand as a bishop who talked sense about modern problems, and as a chairman who was genial but alert to detail and honest in resolving complex issues. He envisaged a
“new culture” reconciling science and religion, industrial technology and humane ethics, and bringing excitement and hope. He combined intellectual power with cheerful populism, and liveliness of mind with warmth of
heart. Married to Margretta McKay in 1943, his willingess to be involved and to assist wore him down and he died of a heart attack in 1972.
Papers from the whole career of Bishop Ramsey, from school at Farnsworth, to Christ's College Cambridge, Oriel College Oxford, and Durham, reflecting every aspect of his many theological, academic and administrative interests. There are also
offprints of most of his periodical articles which formed the basis for J. Pye's
Bibliography (1979).
