Biography

Rev. William Vincent Smith was born on 27 July 1900. He was educated at Ushaw College and ordained priest at St Hilda's, Sunderland, on 25 July 1925. From September 1925 to September 1934 he was curate at St Andrew's, Worswick Street, Newcastle, during which time he published his first book Catholic Tyneside (1930). He was then curate at Tudhoe, Heaton and Ushaw Moor and became parish priest at Tow Law in 1941. After eight years he transferred to All Saints, Lanchester, where he remained until his retirement in 1971. He died on 19 February 1985.

Smith covering all aspects of recusant history in the North East of England, including a substantial number of transcripts of documents from various English archives highlighting the development of regular and secular missions in most of the major towns in the counties of Durham and Northumberland, as well as histories of the major Catholic recusant families in the region; correspondence relating to research enquiries; notes compiled by Fr Smith with further transcripts of documents; printed material; and newspaper cuttings.

“Durham Obituary Books”:
Original manuscripts containing lists of names of deceased Catholics from the Durham area arranged according to month of death. The first book has dates ranging from the 1740’s to the 1760's including a confirmation list from 1757 and a copy of the 21st Canon of the Faithful from the 4th Lateran Council. The book has been fully transcribed and a commentary is included which analyses handwriting and provides further information on some of the people listed. The second book is the obituary book of Rev Nicholas Clavering who was priest at Old Elvet, Durham 1768 – 1787. A transcription of the book is included.
