Administrative history

Trevelyan College was founded in 1966 and named after George Macaulay Trevelyan, the historian and chancellor of the university. Originally an all-female college, men were admitted for the first time in 1990. The college has become a diverse, international community with just over 1,000 students. It is renowned for its distinctive hexagonal architecture, designed as a “modern castle”, with all of its facilities interconnected and under one roof. It is a mix of modern and traditional, combining valued traditions such as gowned formals with a forward-thinking mind set. It has a thriving arts scene suited to all interests and abilities, supported by outstanding musical and theatrical facilities with a 60-seat theatre and a fully sound-proofed rehearsal and recording room on campus. It also has a large indoor sports hall, an outdoor all weather sports court, and a refurbished gym. In 2020, it had 37 different clubs, covering everything from football to Frisbee, and punches well above its weight in the intercollegiate leagues. It has an excellent careers programme that connects students with established alumni in various sectors, and hosts regular careers talks and networking sessions. It also has an extensive travel bursary scheme.

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Head of Collections (email pg.library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. Arrangement

College records are arranged as follows:
A Foundation
B Governance
C Administration
D Academic
E Clubs, Sports, Associations
F Photographs
G Publications and Ephemera
H Deposited/donated collections
I Artefacts
J Associated Trusts

Cataloguing of the archive by Michael Stansfield has been in process since 2015.

Appraisal

Some accessions are appraised on site before transfer, others are appraised when received at Palace Green Library. Clean duplicates are generally removed. Unless in exceptional circumstances, routine personnel files, funding applications, and other records containing sensitive personal information have generally been disposed of, in line with the Unversity's Record Retention Schedule.

Accruals

Continuous further accruals are anticipated. In April 2004, a retention schedule and other records management procedures were developed for the university's records to facilitate the regular transfer of records from the university's departments and offices to the archive. This draft retention schedule was developed further on the appointment of the first university records manager in August 2006, revised in 2019.

Papers relating to the Ruth First Memorial Fund applications and accommodation at Trevelyan College
The Ruth First Memorial Fund was set up to continue the provision of educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa. It developed out of the Southern African Students Education Fund in the 1960s. From the academic year 1993/4, the programme was expanded to include one year taught Masters degree students. The arrangement includes the waiving of fees by the University and Departments and payment of students' maintenance and travel costs by the Trust from funds contributed largely by staff and students of the University. The fund is named after Ruth First, a writer, teacher and practical academic who, having been expelled from South Africa in 1984, was a lecturer in Sociology and Middle Eastern Studies from 1973-1977. She then became Research Director of the Centre for African Studies at Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo. She was assassinated in August 1982 by a letter bomb believed to have been sent from Pretoria.

In 2023, the Senior Common Room launched the Global Dynamics lecture series, starting with six talks on China’s place in the world by world-leading experts from the Universities of Oxford, Warwick, Durham, Naples L’Orientale, London School of Economics, and 3Sixty Strategic Advisors Ltd, London. Global Dynamics explores topics of international significance across the four faculties and provides a key opportunity for our students, staff and SCR members to engage in interdisciplinary discussion with leading authorities on changing global dynamics. The lectures are free and open to all, and we are delighted to welcome participants from across the University and local community to join us. Each lecture is followed by dinner with the speaker, with complimentary places available for students, to promote further discussion.'
