The Ruth First Memorial Fund was set up to continue the provision of educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds in South Africa. It developed out of the Southern African Students Education Fund in the 1960s. From the
academic year 1993/4, the programme was expanded to include one year taught Masters degree students. The arrangement includes the waiving of fees by the University and Departments and payment of students' maintenance and travel costs by the Trust
from funds contributed largely by staff and students of the University. The fund is named after Ruth First, a writer, teacher and practical academic who, having been expelled from South Africa in 1984, was a lecturer in Sociology and Middle Eastern
Studies from 1973-1977. She then became Research Director of the Centre for African Studies at Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo. She was assassinated in August 1982 by a letter bomb believed to have been sent from Pretoria.
