Arrangement

The papers have chiefly been arranged in sections corresponding to different phases of his career, and are arranged chronologically within these sections. An exception has been made with the notebooks and photographs which have been listed in separate sections. Sir Evelyn jotted down notes in a series of notebooks throughout his career, often recording official subjects and personal interests, such as bird watching, in the same notebook, and returning to a particular notebook after a gap of some years. It was therefore impossible to divide them according to his career. Similarly, photographs have been kept as a separate entity.
