Manuscript codex containing a Latin sermon cycle by Ralph Ardens written in England before 1469. Inscriptions indicate that it was used at a church (perhaps in Berkshire) and at Tarrant Hinton (Dorset). It was presented to Bishop Cosin's Library in 1673.

Layout

No evidence of line-pricking. Written space 142-153 x 103 mm; framed in faint gray. 35-39 long lines. Original running titles: sermon-numbers in ink, 1-123, on rectos, preceded by a red paraph.

Script

Written in anglicana with secretary features, laboriously, by one hand, including rubrics, with the sermon-texts in a larger script including textura features (e.g. serifs to ascenders in place of hooks).

Decoration

Rough. Lemmata underlined in red. Text-capitals lined with red. Paraphs, red or, to invocation above item (2), blue. Initials: (i) to sermons and item (4), 2-line, blue, with infilling and commonly flourishing, in red; (ii) to items (1) and (2), 3-line, as (i).

Corrections and annotation

Original apparatus to items (1) and (3); many marginal notes, end of 16th century, and on flyleaves. “Maria” and “Prologus” erased f.120r.

Binding

Standard Tuckett binding, mid 19th century full brown calf over thick wooden boards (Charles Tuckett, binder to the British Museum, rebound many Durham manuscripts in the 19th century)

Written in England, before 1469.

Provenance

Given in 1469 to a church, perhaps in Berkshire, for the use of the vicar and his successors, cf. “<liber ecclesie parochialis ... iohannis ... in com...>”, Cosin MS V.iii.10 f.2r, erased and over-written. Used probably by E S curate of Tarrant Hinton (Dorset), possibly the Ed Stanley whose baptism in 1544 is noted f.256v. “Ex dono Ric: Baddeley: 25o August 1673” (altered from 1670), f.4v. Richard Baddeley senior, died 1671; the donor must be his son of the same name. Not one of George Davenport's books. Ex-libris and shelf-numbers, f.5r, by Rud.
