Open for consultation.

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Sub-Librarian, Special Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

Arrangement

Unlike the probate records from the bishop of Durham's registry (which stored all the probate bonds in their own sequence, separately from any associated documents such as wills or inventories), these records are in two series, each of which includes all the original documents stored together:
Within each series, the documents are arranged by the year of probate, and sorted into name order within each year.

Finding aids

This list incorporates all the public information from the North East Inheritance database relating to these records. However, the online database at http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/nei/data/ will generally be found more helpful for research using the probate records, as it can be searched by person, place, occupation and document type as well as dates of probate and of documents. All the data within this catalogue is made available through the online database.

Bibliography

For a bibliography of editions, indexes and other works relating to these and other wills from the York Province, see the Useful texts section of the North East Inheritance project pages. This includes links to online full text, where available.

Ralph LENGE, of Allerton [Northallerton, Yorkshire]
An endorsement to the inventory indicates it was once filed with a testament of a person of the same name in the year 1682: this may have been a contemporary filing error, as there is a surviving will and (£100) bond of a Ralph Leng of Northallerton, weaver, proved and still filed in 1682 (DPRI/6/T/1682/L2/1). It is possible the date on the inventory should read 1682 rather than 1672, and that this inventory is of the goods of the same Ralph Leng whose will, dated 7 Jan 1682, was proved in 1682, and indeed the execution of a £100 bond on goods of £39 value would not be unusual court practice; however, the separate filing of this inventory would indicate there are two persons of the same name dying some ten years apart, but that their personal representative(s) initiated processes in the court at the same time: see - DPRI/6/T/1682/L2/1-2 - DPRI/6/T/1682/L2/3
