About the creator

Nancy Pollard-Brown (née Grose) was a pioneer in the literary studies of recusant history and, especially, the poet and Jesuit priest, St Robert Southwell (1561-1595). Born in Newton Abbot, Devon, she took her BA and MA degrees at Westcott College, University of London, developing an interest in recusant history after completing her MA thesis on the life and work of the author and Catholic priest, Richard Stanihurst. Her first professional role after postgraduate studies was teaching at Cheltenham Ladies' College, after which she took up a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University. She taught at Trinity College, Washington University, for the rest of her working life (1959-1986). Nancy developed a reputation as an inspiring educator, receiving a national award for her teaching from the Danforth Foundation in 1966 and an honorary professorship on her retirement. Her publications were modest but influential. Her first major monograph was The poems of Robert Southwell, published in 1967, followed six years later by Two Letters and Short Rules of a Good Life. Her most innovative work was the article “Paperchase: the dissemination of Catholic texts in Elizabethan England”, published in the inaugural issue of English Manuscript Studies in 1989, which tracked the dissemination of Catholic texts via the paper that was used for them. She spent her later years in Oxford, developing a friendship with her neighbour, T. A. Birrell, who was also a distinguished scholar of recusant history. She died in 2015.
