Eleven western hostages were taken by soldiers of the Liberation Front of Southern Sudan on 23 June; all were freed after a military operation by the Sudanese Army on 8 July. The hostages were: John Haspels (missionary, ACROSS), Gwen Haspels (missionary, ACROSS), their children Desta Haspels, Charles Haspels, John Haspels, Willem Noort (nurse, ACROSS), Conrad Aveling (zoologist, Frankfurt Zoological Society), Alois Psheidt (mechanic, Frankfurt Zoological Society), Martin Overduin (pilot, Sight by Wings), Bruce Riggins (pilot, Africa Inland Mission AIR), Ron Pontier (pilot, AIM AIR)
