Sale catalogue description: "A mass of unpublished holograph MSS. An extremely large collection of MSS. including many hundreds of unpublished poems, tales, satires etc. There are separate folders of “Poems & Hymns for Young Folks”, “Tales & Fables”, “Madrigals”, “Sacred Poems by Dr Wolcot”, “Anacreontics”, “New and Old Ballads Composed for Queen Elizabeth”.
John Wolcot 1738-1819 who wrote under the pseudonym of Peter Pindar was ordained in 1769 but abandoned the church and in 1789 went to London where he commenced writing satires. He is perhaps best known for his “Bozzi and Piozzi” but made further attacks on Boswell and other literary figures of the time. His ballads were admired for their surprising touches of tenderness. This collection has remained for thirty years in the hands of an owner of a private press, who contemplated publishing the material but was overwhelmed by the size of the collection: it is of obvious interest for the student of 18th century literature."
