Collationflyleaf (f.i), singleton, I-X8, XI4, endleaf (f.85) singleton. The final quire (XI), codicologically and scribally distinct, is probably a late 12th century replacement.

Signatures: Contemporary signatures (Roman numerals .i.-.x., flanked by single dots) on quires I-X, final verso, lower margin centre.


Condition of manuscriptThe volume has suffered fire, liquid and mould damage; the lower corners of f.i-57 have been trimmed off, presumably to remove the worst affected areas; f.33-40 are particularly cockled, possible soot residue on some leaves.
Layout

Written area. quires I- X: up to 170 x 140 mm (text and gloss next hit); up to 155 x 65 (biblical text); three-column glossed book design, the width of the central column unvarying. Quire XI: 190 x 152 mm (text and previous hitgloss next hit); three-column, alternate-line glossed book design, the width of the central column varying from 20-55 mm. Lines. quires I-X: up to 14 of biblical text (space, 11 mm; height of minims, 3 mm); up to 43 of previous hitgloss next hit (space, 4 mm; height of minims, 2 mm); both written above top line. Quire XI: 47 horizontal rulings; up to 24 of biblical text, written on every other line (space, 8 mm; height of minims, 2+ mm); biblical text written below top line, previous hitgloss next hit above top line.
Pricking: awl. quires I-X: prickings survive intermittently in all three outer margins; a pricking at top and bottom for each of the verticals; prickings in the outer margin for the widely-spaced biblical text horizontals, but not for the previous hitgloss next hit horizontals. Quire XI: pricked in all four margins; prickings in both side margins for every horizontal.
Ruling. quires I-X: lead. Single verticals flank the text-block as a whole; double verticals flank the central biblical text column; widely-spaced horizontals (guided by prickings) for the biblical text, none extended. Horizontal rulings for the previous hitgloss (interlinear and marginal alike) were added on an ad hoc basis, unsupported by prickings. Quire XI: verticals as in quires I-X, a full grid of 47 horizontals, the top two and bottom two extended.

Script

Quires I-X written in Protogothic with semi-quadrata tendencies; quire XI written in Textualis quadrata.

Decoration

The spaces reserved for initials for the prologue (f.1r, 2 lines high) and the gospel incipit (f.3r, 4+ lines high) remain unfilled.

Binding

Bound in Durham by Waghorn in the 18th century; panelled calf over pasteboard.

Written in England or Northern France, last quarter 12th century.

Provenance

Inscription: “Liber iste inscribitur Rad: de Norham ...”, 17th century note, f.ir, top (presumably copied from a flyleaf lost in the subsequent rebinding).
“liber Sancti Cuthberti” mid 14th century, f.1r, top, to which “In le Spendement” was added, start of 15th century.
Pressmark: “.C.”, later 14th century, f.1r, top right.
Listed in Spendement catalogues of 1392 and 1416.

With preface. Space reserved for the first words of the gospel remained blank. No chapter numbering; chapter numbers added by an early modern hand. Light supplementary glossing in lead and ink (in some cases initial notes in lead were then formalised in ink), later 12th century
