The British Council of Churches was founded in 1942 through an amalgamation of existing ecumenical bodies to further common Christian action and promote the cause of unity among the Churches of Great Britain and Ireland. On the foundation of the
World Council of Churches in 1948, it became an associated national council. Its membership increased over the years and, from 1965, the Roman Catholic Church sent observers to its meetings. Membership comprised not only the Anglican and mainline
Protestant churches in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland but also the Greek Orthodox church, the Coptic Orthodox Church, various Pentecostal bodies, and other denominations. The work of the Council was carried out by various committees,
including education, international affairs, mission and unity, social responsibility, and youth. When the Roman Catholic Church formally joined in 1990, the name of the organisation was changed from the British Council of Churches to the Council of
Churches for Britain and Ireland. In 1999 the council adopted the name Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and now serves as the coordinating body and clearing house for four national ecumenical bodies: Churches Together in England, Action of
Churches Together in Scotland, Churches Together in Wales, and the Irish Council of Churches.
Papers of the British Council of Churches and its relationship with the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, mostly collected by a committee member, Rev Cuthbert Rand. The papers include minutes of meetings from associated committees,
ecumenical work in the North East of England, and publications and printed material by the British Council of Churches and other ecumenical organisations.
