College history

Two female home students living in the city of Durham were first admitted to the university in January 1897. Such home students continued as a small element in the university, on occasion totalling less than 10 between the wars. They were administered by a censor and had a common room at the top of the Durham Women's Union Society premises in 44 North Bailey. Numbers grew rapidly after 1945 and were no longer home students, being from all over the country. St Aidan's Society was formed in 1947 with Miss Scott as its first principal. As well as various lodgings, accommodation was provided in Shincliffe Hall from 1947 and also in 24 and 26 North Bailey from 1955 when the principal moved to the North Bailey and a vice-principal was appointed to take charge at Shincliffe.
The Society became a college in 1961 in anticipation of a purpose-built home, which was built on Windmill Hill to the design of Sir Basil Spence. It was designed around a theme of curves and straights, broadly in the form of a hand, with parallel accommodation corridors that enclose a spacious garden and landscaped grounds. It was occupied from October 1964, when resident tutors were appointed, and officially opened in June 1966. The college became mixed in October 1981. Undergraduates are all members of the JCR and postgraduates, along with mentors etc, are all members of the SCR.

Records are generally appraised on site before transfer, or are appraised when received at Palace Green Library. Clean duplicates are generally removed.

Accruals

Continuous further accruals are anticipated. In April 2004, a retention schedule and other records management procedures were developed for the university's records to facilitate the regular transfer of records from the university's departments and offices to the archive. This draft retention schedule was developed further on the appointment of the first university records manager in August 2006, revised in 2019.
