Administrative history

King's College was created in 1937 by the amalgamation of Durham University's Armstrong College and the College of Medicine in Newcastle on the formal federalisation of Durham University. It was governed by its own rector, who alternated with the warden of the Durham Colleges as vice-chancellor of the whole university, and its own council. It comprised around two-thirds of the university's student population. Whilst the subjects of Science and Medicine, including Dentistry, had been its core strengths, by 1937 it also taught most of the subjects covered in Durham and so, after various proposals during the 1950s, it finally became the independent University of Newcastle in 1963. Students graduating at Newcastle from 1963 who had matriculated pre-1963 were entitled to take their degrees from Durham if they so wished, so Newcastle students, especially postgraduates, continue to appear in Durham pass lists throughout the 1960s. Also some committees continued to operate jointly after 1963, but 1963 was effectively the end of Newcastle's association with Durham.

Contents

No significant records from the administration of King's College have yet come to light in Durham. The series here in Durham comprise the occasional item that has been found in other collections or has been specifically donated by alumni, and features particularly copy photographs of groups at King's.

Accession details

Occasional items received from alumni.

Conditions of access

There is restricted access to administrative records less than 30 years old, with some further restrictions, generally as noted, on records less than 80 years old where the Data Protection Act applies.

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Head of Collections (email pg.library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

Accruals

Further accruals may be anticipated. In April 2004, a retention schedule and other records management procedures were developed for the university's records to facilitate the regular transfer of records from the university's departments and offices to the archive. This draft retention schedule was developed further on the appointment of the first university records manager in August 2006, and revised in 2019.

UND/B contains much about the administration of the Newcastle colleges pre-1963 in the minutes of the university's central committees, such as Senate and Council, and there are also the records of faculties which only operated in Newcastle, such as Medicine, Applied Science and Agriculture, and it also includes some minutes of the central committees of King's.
UND/C contains the central filing of the University Office pre-1963 which covered the administration of the Newcastle colleges, and so some files relate to Newcastle, as well as Durham, and others are exclusively about Newcastle.
UND/G contains some records of the university-wide major sports teams, such as rugby, football, cricket, rowing, who often drew a majority of their members from the Newcastle colleges.

The archives of King's College, and its antecedents the College of Science/Armstrong College and the College of Medicine, are held by Newcastle University.
