Contents of collection

Correspondence and official papers relating to the passage of the bill permitting the construction of the Cow Green Reservoir above Caldron Snout on the river Tees in Teesdale. The material was assembled by opponents to the scheme challenging the development both because it would destroy a unique natural environment and also because they judged the plans to be compromised by the local geology. It was collected by Dr G. A. L. Johnson of the Geology Department, University of Durham during his work as a consultant to the opponents of the construction of the reservoir.
In addition to offical papers recording the inquiries in the Houses of Commons and Lords in 1965-1966 there is a great deal of the background correspondence of the various parties an their agents, scientific data collected during the investigation and records of the campaign mounted against the reservoir by local and national naturalists.

Accession details

Presented by Dr G. A. L. Johnson in 1989 (Misc.Acc. 1989/90:5). The material listed at 1596/2/245-275 was found separately and was probably donated by Dr Margaret Bradshaw (Misc.Acc. 2000/2002:21).

Conditions of access

Open for consultation.
