Condition of manuscriptFore-edge and top edge cropped. Parchment bifolia dirty and stained; holes with loss of text in f.1, 42. Paper spongy, with badly frayed edges, corners dog-eared, torn (f.23, 28-29), dirty and stained (reagent f.5r-5v, 42v, ink f.34v); large loss of text at top of f.2v-3r, lesser at feet of leaves, lower quarter of f.33 torn off; f.39 loose. New paper leaves supplied for losses between f.2 and 3, 16 and 17 (3), 17 and 18, 20 and 21, 32 and 33, 35 and 36 (2), 39 and 40 (2). Edges of all original paper leaves repaired.There were before repair two paper stubs after f.18; traces of writing on the second were the line-ends of f.17v, displaced by refolding, now rectified.
Layout
No evidence of pricking. Written space approx. 155-170 x 100-110 mm, often not filled or exceeded by items and additions of varying length; blind framed, mostly not visible. 33-48 long lines.
Script
Written in a smallanglicana, expertly, by one hand, with changes of pen and ink.
Decoration
Underlining and paraphs in red in most original items. Initials, 2-line, red, f.35-38.
Corrections and annotation
Most of the Latin sidenotes in the original hand have been cropped. A few sidenotes by hands of added recipes. Crosses against a number of recipes, in brown plummet.
“A book for all manner of soores”, f.13r, mid/late 16th century,
other unintelligible markings in the same black ink and a pentrial in the outer margin of f.36v. An unintelligible 16th/17th century English note on the blank lower third of f.33r, has been partly torn off. On the outer margin of f.36v a 16th/17th century recipe “To macke comun inke of wine tacke a quart ...”. “John Cryzostum with gyld<int?> mouth”, f.37v outer margin; and, perhaps by the same 16th/17th century hand, an alliterative line, “And yf thou wist what thing it wear”, f.40r.
Binding
Left unbound for some time, to judge by dirt and damage on the outer pages of quires. Covered with brown calf, end 17th century, with a pair of blind fillets round edges of sides and vertically on each side ca. 35 mm in from spine, and with Hugh Hutchinson's tool no. 6 blind in right-angles and his dog-tooth edge-roll D; original smooth spine with thirteen pairs of horizontal fillets. “IV 1” in 17th/18th century ink in the fourth compartment down. A new pastedown and conjoint free endleaf added at front and back, mid 19th century. Repaired in house 1998, revealing much loose sand, some dark, possibly used for blotting ink.
