Newcombe on the construction of the Abu Hamed-Kareima line (SAD.49/1/41-250). Next G.R. Storrar works on bridge construction around Shediyeb and Khor `Arab (SAD.49/1/259-350) before going to Asoteriba to work on the Port Sudan line with C.M. Hickley and others (SAD.49/1/350-510). Information includes detailed descriptions of everyday life, with G.R. Storrar's observations on his new experiences, specific incidents, the work being carried out on the railway line and the workers undertaking it, trips made on days off. The letters also contain information about numerous colleagues, whose names are indexed at the end of the volume

G.R. Storrar then works on the Blue Nile bridge alongside contactors, the Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company Ltd (SAD.50/1/203-258). After a period of leave, a short time in charge in Atbara, and some bridge work at Er Rogel, G.R. Storrar does some relaying work between Khartoum and Shendi (SAD.50/1/288-306), then works on the White Nile bridge at Rabak, with S. Upton and F.W. Stephen (SAD.50/1/308-387 and SAD.50/1/416-479). Storrar is based at Rabak, working on the White Nile bridge and a line out of Kosti (SAD.51/1/15-61), then spends time working on the Shereik Diversion (Atbara-Abu Hamed line), camping for the duration of the project (SAD.51/1/61- 88). He then works briefly on the Atbara bridge (SAD.51/1/88-95), before taking over Gebeit district from A.R. Windham, with projects relating to the Suakin and Tokar lines and trips to Kassala in connection with a proposed line in the Gash delta (SAD.51/1/96-546). Information contained in diary entries includes working and socialising, with various visitors, and time spent working in the garden at Gebeit. Letters are handwritten (SAD.51/1/1-348), typed (SAD.51/1/349-545), then handwritten again from SAD.51/1/546 to the end of the diary

Diary four in the series, containing a record of G.R. Storrar's time as District Engineer, Gebeit. Entries include details of work throughout the district and G.R. Storrar's social activities with numerous colleagues and friends. Sections SAD.52/1/226-353 and SAD.52/1/389-438 relate to a preliminary reconnaissance and subsequent expedition in Darfur, to survey for a line from Rahad to El Fasher. The diary also contains information about the Port Sudan Volunteers and work at Port Sudan.

Specific details include the proclamation of a new Sultan of Egypt (SAD.52/1/51), a theft of dhurah from the goods train at Musmar (SAD.52/1/72-73), an accident involving `Ali abu Dahab, foreman at Sinkat (SAD.52/1/89-90), visiting the wrecked Russian boat Estonia with P.N. Draper, C. Havercroft, R.F. Fisher and H.F. Nottage (SAD.52/1/147-148), motoring F.R. Wingate between Summit and Sinkat (SAD.52/1/153-154) and Bishop McInnes, Bishop in Jerusalem, to Suakin (SAD.52/1/212,217), and taking local leave to Wad Medani and El Obeid (SAD.52/1/182-197).
Other information includes details of the various troops stationed in Sudan (the Manchester (SAD.52/1/84), London (SAD.52/1/84-138) and Warwick (SAD.52/1/138ff) Regiments), colleagues going to the Dardanelles, including M.E. Details of an expedition to reconnoitre the route from Rahad to the Darfur frontier for a line to El Fasher (with a history of Darfur at SAD.52/1/221-226).
G.R. Storrar describes preparations for the trip, liaising with H.A. MacMichael (SAD.52/1/227-230). For the first stage of the trek, Rahad to El Odaiya via Abu Zabad, entries relate to the trek party, journey, countryside, wildlife, camps, shooting, and local people (SAD.52/1/238,243), with comparisons between Kordofan and Gebeit districts. Sections on ethnology (SAD.52/1/239-243) and the Nuba (SAD.52/1/259-273) are cribbed from the Intelligence Department Handbook. Nubas, the suq and survey work at Abu Zabad are also described (SAD.52/1/259-278). G.R. Storrar continues to survey to El Odaiya, then to En Nahud, where he receives instructions to reconnoitre to the Darfur frontier on the track of the expeditionary force (SAD.52/1/294,299). Entries include descriptions of En Nahud (SAD.52/1/300), the trek and time spent in Umm Shanqa, where he meets J.A. Gillan and surveys the area (SAD.52/1/318-322). G.R. Storrar also describes his visit to Jebel El Hilla, meeting H.A. MacMichael, surveying at Luqud (SAD.52/1/328- 333), and Darfur wells (SAD.52/1/333,336). He then returns to El Obeid via En Nahud (SAD.52/1/341- 347), then goes to Atbara to discuss the trip with E.C. Midwinter and F.R. Wingate (SAD.52/1/351-353)

G.R. Storrar is on local leave (relieved by R.E. More) and is visited by his sister, Doris Storrar. The two go sight-seeing in Cairo and Luxor (SAD.52/1/400-423), then to Khartoum where G.R. Storrar receives a driving lesson and they lunch with the F.R. Wingates and H.B. Rivington (SAD.52/1/430). G.R. Storrar then sees Doris off to Atbara (SAD.52/1/435) and leaves for El Obeid to begin his survey trip to Darfur

1916 Nov 18 - 1917 Feb 3
Details of G.R. Storrar's trip to Darfur to survey for a line into El Fasher, travelling by motor car via En Nahud, Wad Banda, Deim Garad and Jebel el Hilla, to the Mechanical Transport base at El Fasher (SAD.52/1/454) where he sees R.W. Knollys, Snell, H.V.V. Kyrke and P.J.V. Kelly. G.R. Storrar gives a description of `Ali Dinar's Palace and El Fasher town, historical information and details of specific places such as `Ali Dinar's armoury (SAD.52/1/456-480), and an account of his time in El Fasher, with information about `Awad Ahmad (SAD.52/1/485-490), Abdelmontilib `Ali and El Taga bint Zakariya (SAD.52/1/477). Details of cases heard by Atterbury of the Slavery Department are also included at SAD.52/1/491.
The trek continues to El Odaiya via Dadinga, Saniya Karau wells, Taweisha and Sharafa (SAD.52/1/493-512), then back to El Fasher, where G.R. Storrar and `Awad Ahmad visit the Malik Mustafah Ghalram (SAD.52/1/543,546). Details include villagers using a cotton gin, evaluating a possible rail route from Beringil to Dara (SAD.52/1/530-533) and a meeting with the `umdah of Gedid Ras el Fil (SAD.52/1/535-536). G.R. Storrar then travels by car to En Nahud and El Obeid before returning to Gebeit via Atbara (SAD.52/1/558)
