Previous custodial history

The Quartet's records have always been held by its members, succeeding players taking on administrative duties and the records themselves from retiring members.

Conditions of access

Open for consultation. Access to some items will be limited under terms of the UK Data Protection Act 1998 (noted at item level).

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Sub-Librarian, Special Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

Arrangement

The arrangement has tried to reflect those records series most consistently adopted by the Quartet's successive record keepers, and their assigned administrative functions. Series ALQ 3/2 contains records from many other series (see under ‘Processing’ heading). It is therefore suggested that researchers investigating particular aspects of the Quartet's activites should consult the main series first, and then cross-check the relevant period of VAT records in ALQ 3/2 in order to be sure that a complete record of activity is captured. In addition, in the case of two large files, ALQ 2/4/A/1983A and ALQ 2/4/B/2, the original working arrangements are retained: the contents of file ALQ 2/4/A/1983A covers many different file series in the current arrangement, but which have been cross-referenced as necessary. The archive will continue to accrue records so long as the Quartet is active.
ALQ 1 Personnel records; Ephemera; Photographs and graphic artwork.
ALQ 2 Secretary.
ALQ 3 Treasurer.
ALQ 4 Recordings.
ALQ 5 Scores and parts.
ALQ 6 Unrelated ephemera.

Processing

The Quartet's records were not always maintained in a systematic manner. For the main part they were accessioned in a disordered sequence of re-used A4 envelopes. The arrangement adopted here has tried to reflect those records series most consistently adopted by the Quartet's successive records keepers, and their assigned administrative functions. Two members of the Quartet usually each took the role of Secretary and Treasurer, but many records series are in fact split between each, such that the more ordered VAT record series ALQ 3/2 contains items whose companions may be found in many other series in this collection. The Quartet has also employed a series of management agencies through its life: records accrued by these agencies relating to the Quartet do not form part of this archive.

Appraisal

Duplicates and unrelated personal records inadvertently intermixed with the collection have been returned to the donors.

Accruals

Further accruals are expected.

Technical requirements

Collection contains digital audio and audio-visual records: audio and video (VHS) cassette tapes, DVDs, CDs, a minidisc. The Quartet's website has also been archived (quarterly) from 2013-2015, and biannually from 2015, and may be consulted (offline) upon request.
