Contents

The main part of the Earl Grey Papers was deposited in Durham in April 1955 and the papers of the 2nd Earl were the first to be arranged and listed. A division was made between what was considered to be the political and public and the personal and family correspondence and, although neither category is mutually exclusive, this division has up to the present time been maintained. In October 1956 a summary list of the political and public correspondence, prepared by Mr Malcolm Jack, was published and a more detailed card index, also compiled by Mr Jack, which included particulars of subject files, was kept in the Search Room. Subsequent deposits of material have been incorporated into this framework and some revisions have been made. The present list supersedes all previous means of reference, but the wealth and importance of the material merits a more detailed listing when time and resources allow. The personal and family papers, which have been listed separately, should also be consulted in conjunction with this list.
Most of the material listed here concerns British domestic politics especially Parliamentary Reform, and the Catholic Question, but there is a significant amount on foreign affairs, especially in 1806-7 when Grey, then Lord Howick, was Foreign Secretary. There is also a little about naval matters from the time in 1806 when he was First Lord of the Admiralty. A disappointing feature is the dearth of material before 1800, although Grey was active in politics from 1786.

The first part of the list is of correspondents, arranged in alphabetical order, followed by subject files, also arranged alphabetically, with, at the end, miscellanea, addresses presented to Grey, Grey's notes for speeches, and volumes found among the papers, including many original letters to Grey from 1st Earl of Durham, his son-in-law, which came to us mounted and bound in 4 volumes.
