Administrative History

The chapels at Ushaw College, and the associated religious ceremonies and services that occurred in them, were central both to the training of the seminarian and the role of the college as, fundamentally, a religious institution. A number of chapels were built for a variety of different purposes, including St. Joseph's, Holy Family, St Charles's, St Michael's, English Martyrs (War Memorial), St Thomas's (Wilkinson Memorial), St Pius X's, Douai Martyrs, and St Aloysius Chapel (for the Junior Seminary students). The largest, and most central to the religious life of Ushaw College, is St. Cuthbert's Chapel. Originally a Pugin chapel built in 1847, it was replaced by the present one which was designed by Dunn and Hansom and completed in 1884. All the major services, including masses, ordinations, and certain public ceremonies (including episcopal consecrations), took place in this chapel.

Contents

Papers, mostly relating to services and ceremonies in St Cuthbert's Chapel, including records of various officers (master of ceremonies and sacristans); records of the services (mass books and printed orders of service); and some modern music records for church services. There is also a series of records relating to the relics at Ushaw College, including authentication statements and correspondence highlighting provenance.
