Layout
No pricking visible and only traces of blind or brown plummet frame ruling, except for f.19v, 41v, 57v-58r, 64v, 65v-66r, 67v-69r, 80v-81r, 82v, frame in red ink; written space 90-105 x 70-85 mm; 14-20 lines.
Script
Written by one clear set mixed cursive of predominantly secretary forms , but with looped bhkl, some unlooped d, some reverse e and final sigma s, in deep black (excepting f.20-22 grey) and much in red; opening and closing lines of some items in tall textura (minims 7-10 mm) or bastard text, most probably by the same hand. Somewhat elaborated initials and rope-like line fillers in inks of text. Signed by Thomas Ashby, Austin Canon of Bridlington Priory, on f.23r. He was ordained from the priory at York 1501-03 (YAS RS 150, p. 252) but is not in the pension list from its suppression after the execution of the prior in 1537.
Corrections and annotation
The name and title of St Thomas of Canterbury on f.8r and 68v, and the indulgence rubrics of Popes Julius II, the Lateran and Urban V on f.20v, 21r, and 21v have been cancelled in accordance with legislation of Henry VIII, but not those of Boniface VI on f.22v, presumably by oversight.
Binding
Slightly speckled brown calf over millboards, with three raised bands and blind fillets, triple around boards and vertically one-third of the width from the spine, like the binding of the former Cosin MS V.v.16, which has an inscription by Davenport dated 1648, before he came to Durham in Bishop Cosin's service. Cosin MS V.v.19 does not have a known roll of Hugh Hutchinson of Durham on the edges of the boards, but a row of blind squares. The spine is unrepaired yet the present endpapers are 19th century, as is the gilt spine class number (with U not V as on a few other unreplaced spines, MSS V.v.8, 11, 14), and the standard bookplate of Cosin's Library on the front pastedown. f.i is a broad stub probably of a 17th century pastedown covered by a 19th century one;
f.iir, a 17th century flyleaf conjoint with f.iii, shows stains from the turn-ins of the present binding.

A copy, by the main hand of the volume (Thomas Ashby's), of a receipt by Thomas N, prior, and the convent of Bridlington, to the prior and convent of Kirkham, for £4 6s. 8d., due for the last Martinmas term of the annual pension from Little Kelk owed by reason of their church of Foston [on the Yorks. Wolds], Bridlington, 1503. This may be imaginary, rather than copied from an original document: Robert Danby was prior 1498-1506, and there is no evidence of a Prior Thomas after 1409, following John in 1408 (VCH Yorkshire II, 204- 205). The canons of Bridlington had interests in Little Kelk and a chapel there, but the church of Foston belonged to the Carthusians of Hull from 1378; possibly it was leased to the canons of Kirkham (VCH Yorkshire East Riding ii, 245-247, 187).

This superseded memorandum must have been saved by Ashby to make a bifolium in his book, and later reversed. Knowles and Hadcock say there were 26 canons (and the prior) at the suppression of Bridlington priory in 1537; there are 22 names here, but none are in a list of 14 pensioned in that year: Faculty Office Registers, ed. D. S. Chambers (Oxford, 1966), p. 119, nor in the list of ordinations for Bridlington 1480-1537 in C. Cross & N. Vickers, Monks, Friars and Nuns in Sixteenth Century Yorkshire (Yorks. Arch. Soc. Record Series 150, 1995), pp. 252-4, in which Thomas Ashby occurs 1501-3. From his re-use of the leaf it presumably antedates him; it is possible it comes from another religious house, but the names do not occur in other lists of the same period, excepting Richard Hargrave as a Dominican of York, ordained acolyte 1525 and deacon 1526, ibid., p. 424.
