Administrative History

Collingwood College was founded in 1972 as the first mixed college in Durham University. It was named in memory of Sir Edward Collingwood, mathematician and chairman of University Council. The first students, selected by interviews which focused on their character, sense of humour, and academic determination, began their studies in 1973. As building work on the college continued, students were farmed out to Van Mildert College for their first year. The college had been founded on the principles of informality and friendliness, so was free of the gowns and graces which typically defined a Durham college. Collingwood was originally designed for c.260 students who were allocated individual rooms (unusual for the time), but it has since expanded to accept over 500 students each year. Its location on South Road is on the outskirts of Durham, next to the University’s Botanical Gardens, with a little lake, meadow, a tennis court and gardens. The college's informal, coeducational environment, pleasant location, and single rooms attracted students, and many flocked to join the newly established college.
The university expansion of the early 1990s saw Collingwood double in size. Officially opened in 1994 by H.R.H. The Princess Royal, the college welcomed a series of new wings, built around a croquet lawn and amphitheatre (which is used as a turning-circle and has staged plays and other events). The new wings offered spacious en-suite rooms, raising college capacity to 570 students. Now the largest college in the university, this expansion also saw the addition of a more spacious JCR with a shop, a coffee shop, a games area, and a large and luxurious bar. Further expansion in 2018 saw an all-weather pitch - the 'crumb' - created on site, the development of the multi-purpose Mark Hillery Arts Centre, and a newly built JCR and related student facilities such as a dance studio and fitness suite.
The college is highly reagrded for its significant contribution to the sporting life of Durham University. Boasting the largest amateur football club in Europe, Collingwood College Association Football Club, and regularly heading inter-collegiate leaderboards in football, hockey, netball, and rugby, the college attracts many student athletes each year. Having won the intercollegiate sports' league table every year from 2011-2012 to 2018-2019, college athletes enjoy 'King of the Hill' status. It is also particularly successful academically, with research interests in the college ranging from the study of the Classical World to pioneering work at the vanguard of Science. Supported by its extensive alumni network, the college regularly offers student internships with industry leaders in areas such as medical research, maritime security, and television production. Collingwood also offers a strong artistic culture, performing multiple musical and theatrical productions, and an annual open-air performance of Shakespeare each summer. The Mark Hillery Arts Centre, with its spacious theatre and technical equipment, has opened up Collingwood as a desirable performance space for other colleges, hosting multiple performances from external groups each year. The Collingwood Music Society, now well-served by refurbished music rooms with state-of-the-art recording equipment, embraces a range of musical forms including choral, classical, jazz, funk, and rock and roll.
The informal college structure means that the balls and formals take on a different form to more traditional colleges. Typically hosting two formals per term, one fancy-dress and one black-tie, Collingwood takes advantage of its large grounds and dining hall to host 'mega-formals', in addition to an externally hosted Summer Ball each year. It is also renowned for 'Collingwood Day', an all-day festival which celebrates the college spirit with live musical performances in the turning circle.
Notable alumni include James Cary (TV and radio writer), Benjamin Cook (journalist and author), Joe Crabtree (drummer of the band Wishbone Ash), Stephen Davies (children's author), Peter Elleray (Formula One and Le Mans race car designer), Mark Elliott (travel author), Jonah Fisher (BBC journalist), Lorraine Heggessey (first female controller of BBC One), Rt Rev Nick Holtham (Bishop of Salisbury), Amjad Hussain (Rear Admiral, Royal Navy), Alex Loudon (Warwickshire and England cricketer), Sarah Keith-Lucas (BBC Weather presenter), David Kershaw (CEO of M&C Saatchi), Rt Hon Lord Justice Andrew McFarlane (High Court Judge, Lord Justice of Appeal), Stephen Rowbotham (Olympic rower), Jonny Saunders (BBC Radio 2 sports presenter), Will Smith (Durham County Cricket Club cricketer), David Sproxton (joint founder of Aardman Animations), Mark Gray MBE (former Colonel in the Royal Marines), and Chris Terrill (documentary maker, writer and adventurer).

Accruals

Continuous further accruals are anticipated.
