Translation of a diary found on Barra Musa Kebir Island, believed to have been written by a member of the crew of the Italian submarine Macalle which foundered there after hitting a coral reef. One Macalle crewmember, Chief Petty Officer / Torpedoman Carlo Acefalo, died on Barra Musa Kebir and was buried in the sand. According to the donor, the remaining crew were spotted by an R.A.F. plane from Port Sudan and a tug was sent to the island, but the crew had been rescued hours before it got there, by another Italian submarine. the Guglielmotti, which had travelled from Massawa in what is now Eritrea. Three other members of the crew (including future Admiral Elio Sandroni) had rowed some 300 kilometres back to Eritrea to seek help. Only the diary was found on the island, with the grave of Carlo Acefalo. The name of the Chief Electrician of the Macalle, and most likely author of this diary, was Chief Electrician Third Class Ambrogio Grimoldi. Enclosed with the diary is a copy of the crew list as kept in the records of the "Commission of Inquiry into the loss of the Submarine Macalle" found at the Ufficio Storico della Marina Militare in Rome (SAD.600/8/16).
