Loose sheet diary documenting military activity around the Sudan during 1940-1942. The diary, kept by Howell (most likely in connection with his role as aide-de-camp and private secretary to the Governor-General), contains entries written in a formal style detailing daily events. The main focus of the diary is on enemy attacks and other military activity within the Sudan, along with the activities of British troops in Italian occupied North East Africa. In particular the diary contains detailed accounts of bombing raids and other engagements with enemy forces in the Sudan, particularly in areas on the border with Ethiopia (including Kassala, Kurmuk, Gedaref, Malakal, and Gallabat). It also contains more specific details such as allied and enemy troop numbers within certain areas. Information seems to be mainly drawn from official reports and telegrams along with the eyewitness accounts of colleagues and associates of Howell's. The diary also contains entries dealing with military activity further afield in North Africa and Europe. Interleafed throughout the diary are copies of telegrams between the Qaid and various military and government officials concerning military activities, along with daily situation reports written by Howell.
