Exemplification of a judgement of the Barons of the Exchequer enrolled in K.R. Memoranda Roll, Easter Term, 8 James I, over the tenure of a third of the manor of Newsham, Co. Durham in favour of Francis son of Francis Bunny, clerk.
The tenure of the land since the fifteenth century is recited.
Bunny brought the land from Ralph Bowes and his wife Joan Headlam whose father had left it to John Dowthwaite, with reversion to Joan, in 1564.
The sale was confirmed by a recovery of 1 August 1609.
Dowthwaite's claim was based also on a 21 year grant of the third to him by Charles Duke of Westmorland on 12 August 1565, and even after Charles forfeited his Earldom for rebellion Dowthwaite had continued in possession.
