Two leaves from a missal. The forms are the same as those of Missale ad usum ecclesie Westmonasteriensis, 168-172 and 186-192, except that Lent 3 Thursday gospel begins earlier in John 6, and Lent 3 Friday gospel begins a little later, BL MS Harley 5289 agreeing with Westminster in both cases; for Lent 4 Tuesday the secret is “Haec hostia domine quaesumus emundet ...” and its postcommunion “Huius nos domine sacramenti perceptio ...”, as they are in both BL MS Harley 5289 and The Missal of Robert of Jumièges, p. 77. The printed fragments at Ushaw College and Durham University Libraries are described with those in five other libraries, four also traceable to Foliaged Staff bindings, by D. M. Rogers, "Johann Hamman at Venice ... ".

Layout

No pricking in inner margins; outer margins cropped. Written space 230 x 147 mm. Ruled in drypoint. 2 columns, 40 lines.

Script

Written in Caroline minuscule, expertly, in two sizes, the chanted forms smaller.

Decoration

Initials: (i) to introits, 1- or 2-line, red; (ii) to each form in larger script, 2- or 3-line, red or blue, alternately.

Stocks identifying this as a Durham Priory manuscript (also discusses SA 0008 - a pencil note identifies this as coming from SA 0095); transcriptions; binding rubbings; photocopies of other fragments from the same manuscript found in Ushaw College XVIII.A.5.3 - William Lindwood, Provinciale, (Paris: Printed by Andreas Bocard at the University of Paris, 1501) the upper and lower parts of a bifolium from the same book.

Written in England, early 12th century.

Provenance

Former pastedowns, with marks of four bands and staining from the turn-ins of brown leather covering, in a copy ( Shelfmark of source: Winterbottom XX.A.10, now SA 0126) of P. Beroaldi ed., Opera agricolationum Columellae Varronis Catonisque necnon Palladii (Reggio Emilia, 1496), retaining sides bearing tools (Oldham, AN.h(2) and 340=1005, used by the Foliage Staff binder on other printed books dated 1498-1502), pp. 30-31. Portfolio I/10-11 (see Catalogue of fragments, manuscript and printed, amongst Durham University Library Archives and Special Collections).
