2. Abyei Boundary Dispute
The Abyei area covers 4,000 square miles of desert, farmland, and oil fields located along the border between Sudan and South Sudan. Abyei is claimed by both countries and has been a source of conflict for over 50 years. The Abyei Boundary
Commission was established after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, between the Government of Sudan in the north and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/ Army in the south, to “define and demarcate the area of the nine
Dinka Chiefdoms transferred to Kordofan in 1905”. The Commission included experts and representatives of the local communities and the local administration. When the Commission set the boundary lines in 2005 the Sudan People's LIberation
Movement/ Army refused to accept them. The case was taken to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague in 2008 for settlement. The court delivered its final verdict in July 2009.
