About the creator

The Newman Demographic Survey was founded by Anthony E.W.C. Spencer in October 1953. Its initial objectives included identifying and evaluating sources of demographic, social and cultural statistics about the Catholic community of England and Wales; to prepare estimates of the size and age structure of that community; and to carry out a survey that would reveal the number, religious identity and age and sex structure of pupils in Catholic schools. The project was managed by the Newman Association and a network of committees and working parties was established throughout England. The publication of the first results of the Survey in October 1955 was followed by grants to assist the Ministry of Education in preparing statistics on Catholic education, thus allowing the Survey to expand its operations. In January 1959, the Catholic Education Council agreed to commission an annual statistical survey of Catholic schools which enabled the project to employ salaried staff and expand its range of services to include the development of a parish census service and the commissioning of a 1961 Census of Clergy and Religious. The rapid growth of the Newman Demographic Survey resulted in its separation from the Newman Association and the formation of its own legal entity in 1963. However, owing to financial difficulties and pressure from the bishops who were hostile to the sociological work of the Survey, Anthony Spencer was forced to disband the Newman Demographic Survey in the following year.
