Title: Hayton, Lee and Braddock (Architects) Records
Dates of creation: 1931-2005
Extent: 80 metres
Held by: Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections
Origination: Hayton, Lee & Braddock, architects and surveyors, of Durham City, and their predecessors, Cordingley & McIntyre, and Hayton & Lee
Language:
English
The firm of Hayton, Lee & Braddock may have originated from the architectural practice run by Charles Hodgson Fowler (died December 1910) and his successor W.H. Wood from premises in The College, Durham City, in the precincts of Durham
Cathedral. The same premises were later occupied by Cordingley & McIntyre, architects, a firm which was succeeded by Hayton & Lee (ca. 1971-1976) and then (from ca. 1977) the practice of Hayton, Lee & Braddock. The practice relocated to
premises in Owengate, Durham City in ca.1955, and thence to Stockton-on-Tees in 2006. A number of partners in these practices served as architect to Durham Cathedral from the late 19th century onwards. Others did a good deal of work on
ecclesiastical buildings in the diocese of Durham, and in ca.1945, or possibly from the 1930s onwards, Cordingley & McIntyre were also appointed surveyors to the diocese. The firm and its successors maintained this role until the retirement in
ca.1989 of Alan Lee, who had latterly been the partner chiefly involved in the diocesan work. Thereafter the diocese decided that this survey work should be carried out in-house.
The main architects involved in diocesan work during the period covered by this collection are:
- Donald McIntyre (Cordingley & McIntyre), 1930s-[1970s]
- Matt Hayton (Cordingley & McIntyre, later Hayton & Lee), died 1972
- Alan Lee (Hayton & Lee, later Hayton, Lee & Braddock), appointed Durham Diocesan Surveyor by the Dilapidations Board 1973, retired c.1989
- F.F. Rankin, collaborated with both Hayton and Lee on diocesan work
The collection primarily consists of architects' files relating to work carried out by partners of the practice for the Church of England Diocese of Durham (but excluding work for Durham Cathedral, for which files are deposited with the Durham
Cathedral archives). Many of the files include plans and reports, specifications, photographs etc, alongside correspondence. In addition, there are some files relating to non-diocesan work and a few folders of architectural plans and drawings. The
bulk of the collection is made up of three series, of which only the second is so far listed: files relating to work on diocesan parsonage houses (HLB/Dv), church files (HLB/Dch) and master sets of plans (HLB/Pl). Some other smaller series of files,
plans and photographs are also held, as noted in the list below.
See the collection level description for information on provenance etc.
Access to the records for purposes of private study and research is freely available to searchers, provided that they sign a declaration stating that they will abide by certain stipulated conditions relating to the use of the collection. In
particular, written permission must be obtained before any public use can be made of the documents or copies of the documents.
Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Sub-Librarian, Special Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist
where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material
Church filesReference: HLB/DchDates of creation: 1934 - 2005, but predominantly 1945 onwards
Extent: 15 metres
Files relating to work undertaken by members of the practice for churches within the diocese, in particular relating to quinquennial inspections and subsequent repair works, restorations and reordering schemes. The series also includes some
papers for work on church halls, churchyards, car parks etc. The later files (from late 1990s) are predominantly project management files, relating to specific repair or restoration projects; they include a much larger volume of correspondence and
meeting notes relating to tenders, specifications and contractors etc, as well as correspondence with the parish, DAC, grant funding bodies, local planning authorities etc.
Most files include some plans and reports within a separate docket of the file, alongside the dated correspondence (see separate series HLB/Pl for the master sets of plans). The later files include extensive sets of photographs.
There are very few files relating to work in the 1980s to mid-1990s. The location or survival of any such files is uncertain. Many of the earlier files relate to churches for which HLB architects ultimately lost the contract for quinquennial
inspections, and this is often noted within the list.
The earlier files for quinquennial inspections etc (up to early 1980s) are arranged using the numbers assigned by the practice. These numbers all use the 'Dch' prefix followed by the 'parish number' for the church concerned (distinguishing
different churches etc within the same parish by 'A', 'B' etc). The parish numbers are published in the Durham Diocesan Directory and regularly used by the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the care of churches (DAC), and a similar numbering scheme
has been adopted for the quinquennial inspection reports deposited by the DAC (ref DDR/EA/DAC/2). The later project management files have been occasionally given Dch numbers by the practice, but more often have separate 'project' numbers. However,
they have been numbered within this list using the same 'Dch' pattern as the earlier files for quinquennial inspections etc.

Parsonage house ('vicarage') filesReference: HLB/DvDates of creation: 1931-c.1990
Extent: 49 metres
Files relating to work undertaken by members of the practice for parsonage houses (vicarages and rectories) within the diocese, in particular relating to quinquennial inspections and subsequent repair works, restorations and reordering
schemes.
These files are arranged using the numbers assigned by the practice, which like the HLB/Dch series make use of the 'parish number' for the church concerned (distinguishing different churches etc within the same parish by 'A', 'B' etc). The
earlier files were originally referenced 'Dv' and the later 'Dva', but all have now been arranged in a single 'Dv' sequence. They have not yet been listed, but accession lists for most of the pre-1980 files were deposited with them and can be
searched on request.
General files (for other diocesan properties)Reference: HLB/DgDates of creation: Extent: 1 metre
Files relating to work on glebe houses and other diocesan properties (including some which are physically joined with parsonage houses and so subject to quinquennial inspections). These are arranged using the 'Dg' numbers assigned by the practice
(adding a couple of 'A' numbers where duplicate 'Dg' numbers had been used for different properties).
