Biography

Michael O'Neill joined the University of Durham in 1979 as a lecturer in its English Studies department. He was head of the department from 1997 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2005. He was a central figure in the establishment of the Institute of Advanced Study at the university, being its director (Arts and Humanities) from 2005 to 2011 and serving as the acting executive director from January 2011 until May 2012. O'Neill was a leading scholar of Romantic poetry and a renowned scholar of poetic influence, dialogues, and legacies, particularly with regard to his critical studies and textual editing of the works of Percy Bysshe Shelley. He published on English poetry dating from the late 18th century to the early 21st century, with significant contributions, also, on Dante and Shakespeare.
O'Neill was also a prize-winning poet, publishing four collections of poems during his lifetime with a fifth collection published posthumously in 2019.

Contents

Papers of Michael O'Neill (1953-2018), professor of English Studies at Durham University, scholar of Romantic poetry, and a poet himself. The collection documents his teaching, research and publishing, and his departmental administrative activities, and also his poetry and readings. Also present are circulars etc. of the Wordsworth Trust, publications and papers of the Institute of Advanced Studies, correspondence from colleagues and students, and a few photographs (most from his time at Durham 1979-2018).

Accession details

Donated by Rosemary O'Neill (accession nos Misc.2019/20:5 and 95).

Conditions of access

There is restricted access to administrative records less than 30 years old, with some further restrictions, generally as noted, on records less than 80 years old where General Data Protection regulations apply

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of material from the collection must be sought in advance from the Head of Collections (e-mail PG.Library@durham.ac.uk) and, where appropriate, from the copyright owner. The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material

Arrangement

Some arrangement of the papers has been imposed by the cataloguer. Papers that were originally kept in the same folder remain grouped together to retain a sense of their original order where possible; loose papers have been grouped together, for example, items of correspondence, or typescript poems (arranged alphabetically by title). Publications have only been retained when content relating to O'Neill is found published within them. Photocopies and more ephemeral material have been kept when they evidence O'Neill's teaching or literary interests. The collection is arranged as follows:
A - Lectures
B - Research and Publications
C - Departmental Administration
D - Poetry
E - Institutions

Processing

Initially sorted by Dr Michael Stansfield and Prof. Fiona Robertson, March 2020; further sorting and listing by Beth Hall, October 2021.

Appraisal
