A prominent Syrian family, three generations of which served in the Sudan. The photographs in this collection were donated by Mrs. Najla Shami, daughter of Dr. Salim Atiyah who served as a medical doctor in the Sudan from 1898 to 1920, and sister
of Edward Atiyah who was an official of the Intelligence Department and author of
An Arab tells his story (London, 1946) and Black Vanguard (London, 1952)

Portrait photograph of Samwil Bey Atiyah, one of the early officials of the Intelligence Department, being appointed in 1899, and where he was later succeeded by his nephew, Edward Atiyah. He was a graduate of the Syrian Protestant College
(American University, Beirut). He died in one of Nasser's gaols, having been accused of spying for the British during the Suez crisis. Prior to his imprisonment he had been working at the Sudan Agency in Cairo where he translated Arabic papers

Portrait photograph of Salim Bey Yusuf Atiyah (1878-1925), Syrian physician, in the uniform of Major in the Egyptian Army Medical Corps. He was educated at the American University in Beirut and the USA and later served in the Egyptian Army until
1904. He transferred to Sudan Government service where he was medical officer in charge of the hospitals at Wadi Halfa and Omdurman from 1905 to 1920, when he retired. He was the father of Edward Atiyah
