Durham's World Heritage Site was inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1986 as comprising the cathedral (including all The College buildings up to Prebends Bridge) and castle sites in Durham. It was expanded in 2008 to incorporate the area between the
castle and cathedral extending from the Wear in the west to the North Bailey in the east, that is Palace Green and Owengate and all the buildings around them. The visitor centre was established in the former almshouses building at 7 Owengate in
2011. The centre is a free facility open seven days a week, providing visitors with an overview of the World Heritage Site, including information about what it means to be a World Heritage Site, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to
see and do in Durham. It is administered jointly by the university and the cathedral.

North East Centre for Scientific Enterprise (NECSE)Reference: UND/M2
NECSE was established in 2000 as a collaborative project involving the five universities in the north east region, with Durham University as the lead and providing the base. It was part of a network of 12 UK Science Enterprise Centres established
by the DTI and the Office of Science and Technology, the hub of which was the Cambridge University - Massachusetts Institute of Technology partnership. Its two roles were the commercialisation of inventions arising from the region's high quality
science and engineering base, and fostering enterprise and entrepeneuship within the research base. It provided: new business spin-ous, licence agreements, joint ventures, other forms of idea comercialisation, intellectual property and legal
services, sourcing of fiancne and venture capital, business development advice and mentoring, market assessments and business incubation space. By August 2009, NECSE no longer existed as a functional department, but only as a brand name for

North of England Institute for Christian Education (NEICE)Reference: UND/M3Dates of creation: 1977 - 2013
NEICE was inaugurated on 18 October 1981. It was founded by the St Hild and St Bede Trust to create links between the Christian education activities of the Church and academic research in education, theology and religious studies. Much of its
activity was carried out in support of programmes for adult Christian education, and ministerial and teacher education. In later years, the Management Committee was active in publishing their own theoretical and empirical research. The Institute had
close links with Durham University, especially through its department of Theology and Religion. The director of NEICE, Professor J. Astley, had helped supervise a number of higher degree theses on Christian education topics. Due to the loss of its
main funding stream, NEICE ceased activity and was dissolved at the end of April 2013.

The Bernard Gilpin Society was one of the colleges administered by the Education Department of the National Council of YMCAs. In 1957 the Society was invited to provide a special course of training for candidates nominated by the Central Advisory
Council of Training for the Ministry of the Church of England for ordination within the Church of England for 1 year before proceeding to a theological college 3 year course. Students were not members of the university, but were permitted to join
the Union Society, have borrowing rights at the University Library, have some use of university playing fields, join some some university societies, and participate in Rag Week. It was based at Sands House, Durham with students resident at Dunelm
Hotel, or Bede College, or in a block at Neville's Cross College before new accommodation buildings for the Society were dedicated at Sands House on 4 March 1964. The Society's colours were a boar's head in gold on a black background. It was
administered by a principal, a resident tutor, and an honorary chaplain, with various visiting lecturers, and a JCR for the students.
