Title: Poor Clares, Woodchester Manuscripts
Dates of creation: 17th -20th century
Extent: 71 manuscripts, 1 scrapbook, 1 box of prayer cards and ephemera.
Held by: Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections
Origination: Poor Clares Woodchester
Language: English, French, Latin
The Poor Clares of Woodchester traced their history back to an enclosed Franciscan community started by two English widows in Brussels in 1619, with a formal foundation in August 1621. The monastery was significant enough to host the Chapter of
the restored English Province of the Franciscans in 1630, but plague and the cost of living in the city drove the nuns to move to Nieuport in 1638. By 1658, the community had forty-eight members. They purchased the Prinsenhof in Bruges, the ruined
palace of the Counts of Flanders, in April 1662. They had moved in by the following February and were to remain here for one hundred and thirty-one years. In June 1794, the community left Princenhof, fleeing first to Rotterdam, then via Delft and
London to eventually settle at the end of August at Abbey House in Winchester, owned by Thomas Weld. In 1808 the nuns moved again to Taunton Lodge, from which a second convent was founded in 1860 at Summerwell House, Woodchester. Having been an
enclosed community of the Third Franciscan Order for most of their history, the Woodchester nuns took vows as members of the Second Order (known as ‘Poor Clares’) in July 1973. The community left Woodchester in 2011 to join the Poor Clares at
Lynton, Devon.
The manuscript volumes range in date from the 18th to 20th centuries. They consist primarily of transcriptions of hagiographical texts, with a particular focus on saints from the Franciscan order. Some manuscripts are in Latin and French.
However, the majority are English translations of Italian and Latin texts written by Franciscan writers. Many of the manuscripts towards the end of the series provide instruction on ceremonies, daily routines, and domestic tasks of monastic life.
A variety of ephemeral items were found within the manuscript volumes. These items range from the 17th to 20th century and include prayer cards, paper crafts, ink drawings, and cuttings from early printed books.
There are also some letters covering personal and domestic matters such as visits and birthdays. Other letters provide provenance of the manuscripts and printed books within the Poor Clares' Library.
Deposited by the Poor Clares of Woodchester in 2011, prior to the closure of the convent.
Open for consultation.
