Each diary contains brief entries for most days with the minutiae of his everyday life and comments on his work, court cases, personal and social life, the weather, and recording of letters received and sent.

Reminiscences of Kordofan in 1906, covering MacMichael's early experiences in the area, including a massacre at Talodi and the resulting punitive patrol under the Governor, Major J.R. O'Connell, and a complicated court case involving the chief holyman of El Obeid, Said al-Makki, a suspected Mahdist sympathiser, who claimed that some of the prisoners taken by O'Connell were slaves belonging to him. The case required Sir Reginald Wingate, R. von Slatin and Major Ravenscroft of the Anti-Slavery Department to adjudicate.
