Maria, 3rd Countess Grey

Maria Copley was born in 1803, the daughter of Sir Joseph Copley of Sprotborough, 3rd Bart., by Lady Cecil Hamilton, the divorced wife of 1st Marquess of Abercorn. In August 1832 she married Lord Howick, who succeeded as 3rd Earl Grey in 1845. Her reception by the female members of the Grey family was decidedly cool and her husband frankly admitted in a letter to her after the death of his father that "one of our greatest and most difficult trials will be to get upon the terms we ought to be with my sisters" who had been in some respects "deficient in kindness towards you (and therefore towards me)". [26 July 1845. Papers of 3rd Earl Grey] It is doubtful whether these tensions in the family were ever entirely resolved.
Maria, however, had her own circle of friends, particularly members of the families of 1st Earl of Ellesmere, 4th Duke of Portland and 1st Baron Auckland. Harriet Countess of Ellesmere and Emily Eden, the novelist, whom Charles Greville, brother of the Countess of Ellesmere, described in his Journal (1837-1852, II, 150) as "a very clever but wrong-headed woman", were her life-long friends and major correspondents. Another was Maria's sister-in-law Barbarina Charlotte Grey, a grand-daughter of Barbarina Lady Dacre (1786-1864) poet, dramatist and artist. Some of Lady Dacre's letters are also preserved among these papers. Most of the letters, relating as they do to personal and family matters, will concern the social rather than the political historian though there are some of political interest.

Arrangement

The papers have been listed under the final title attained by each writer. Since most of the correspondents were women whose names changed on marriage and, often, again when the husband succeeded to or was promoted in the peerage, there is in many cases considerable variation in their names. The fact that many of these correspondents signed their letters with initials only or sometimes with nicknames presented a problem but, with a few exceptions, all have been identified.
The papers have been arranged and the present list has been complied by Dr. J. M. Fewster of this Department.
