About the creator

The Haydocks were a notable Lancashire Catholic family residing in Cottam, near Preston. From the time of Henry Haydock, the first chancellor of the earldom (later duchy) of Lancaster in the thirteenth century, until the death of William Haydock in 1717, the family lived at Cottam Hall. The family's more prominent eighteenth/nineteenth century members included George Leo and Thomas Haydock. George compiled a new edition of the Douai Bible and Rheims Testament which was published by his brother, Thomas, in 1814, and became the standard edition of the bible used by English-speaking Catholics. Thomas opened a printing business in Dublin which did not prosper owing to the poor state of trade in Ireland during the 1820s and 1830s. He moved to Preston via Liverpool before his death in 1859. George was appointed as a missioner at Whitby and became a vocal critic of bishops Smith and Penswick, so much so that the latter interdicted him from saying mass in the northern vicariate in 1831. His faculties were restored in 1839 and he was appointed to the mission at Penrith. He died in 1849.

Contents

Papers of the Haydock family, including title deeds relating to the sale of land and property of their Lancashire estate, receipts, probate material, and other financial and legal papers, as well as letters from George Haydock and other members of the Haydock family, mostly on the management of their estates and other financial and legal matters, but also including material on the development of the Whitby mission, the Catholic community in North East Yorkshire during the early 19th century, the 1832 cholera epidemic and the 1832 general election. There are also two files of Bernard Williams's research on the Haydock and Lancashire Catholic families.
