A miscellaneous group of documents originally collected by Durham University Oriental Library. After the merging of the various University libraries, this material was transferred to the care of Archives and Special Collections, where it formed
this separate sequence. Some items have been re-located into more appropriate collections, and some material has been added since the mergers. Some items share a common provenance with material now in Durham University Oriental Museum or amongst the
printed books in the Oriental sequences of Durham University Library.
The provenance of some items is not recorded. Most of the material was accessioned by the Oriental Library.

identifies the ms. as an “Ethiopic Psalter” , and records it to have been “taken by a British soldier at the Sacking of Magdala during the Abyssinian War. Found on the body of a priest, who
lost his life in an attempt to rescue it from a heathen temple”.

Kitab Shawahid al-Qaṭr Anonymous grammatical commentary (parsing) on the verses cited in the grammatical work
Qaṭr al-nadá wa-ball al-ṣadá of `Abd Allah Ibn Hisham. There is
no
dibaja.
The margins of the manuscript are decorated with crude drawings in red, yellow and black ink, often of subjects mentioned in the text: human beings, including a priest, animals (including birds, a gazelle, camel, snake, mouse, ostrich),
weapons,the sun, and the devil (on the penultimate leaf) labelled
Shaitan. At the end of the text is a magic circle with 4 names of God in the outer ring. At the bottom of the page is a note in yellow ink "The number of
picturesin this book is forty". That the pictures were drawn after the book was copied is evident from the fact that the supply leaves too are illustrated. Also the drawing of "a man of quality (
shakhs karim) on f.17a
issuperimposed on a marginal note in the same hand as the text. The manuscript is not dated by either main scribe, but on the last leaf the date (910 A.H./1514) has been added. It is not certain that this date is genuine. Below, in another hand,
thedates 1150 A.H./1737 and Jamada 1151/1738 appear.
f.1-10 are supply leaves, considerably later and more untidy than f.11 onwards. The paper of f.1-10 is European (probably Venetian) and bears the watermarks P B and the three crescents (trilune). f.11 onwards
isalso European, having the trilune watermark. 41 f.

ʻĀmilī, Bahāʾ al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn,
Khulāṣat al-ḥisāb, a mathematical work. It is divided into a
mukaddima and 10
babs. there are many tables in the text. The manuscript is dated
Sha`ban 1224 A.H (1809). Preceeding the text (f.2) and on the whole of f.8 there are mathematical notes in small
ta`lik. There are also frequent marginal notes in
ta`lik in the margins of the manuscript. An owners seal appears on f.27b.
f.33b-34a blank.
f.34b-39b. A short grammatical work; no author mentioned. f.34b, line 4, reads: “Treatise
containingthe solution of certain difficult forms ...”. Divided into two
fasls as indicated by numbers in square brackets. The last few pages of the text, comprising most of
fasl 2 are
lost. Themanuscript contains a Persian stamp of inspection (f.3a and 39b) dated 1311/1893-4.

majmun`na consisting of a number of fragments in different hands and of differing ages, all bound together in considerable confusion. Many of them are magical and religious, giving the texts of various spells
andprayers.
f.1-24. Fragment without title or author of a work on charms and magic, in a good naskhi hand, with headings in red. One of the texts is described thus "found in the handwriting of Shaikh
Shamsal-Din al-Kadiri" (f.8a). Among the spells is one for "killing and destorying a person" (f.11b) and a number of love spells. There is also a description of the power of the "Blessed Seal ... which is the Greatest Name of God" (f.20ff)
f.25-50. A fragment of a magical-religious work, similar in character. No title or author: begins in the middle of a sentence. No headings. Contains the text of a number of prayers. f.29b: In a different hand at the bottom of the page is

Three separate works
Abu `Abd Allah Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Sanusi [vocalised Sunusi] al-Hasani (d.892/1486), al-Mukaddima (?) Earlier and later part vocalised, with interlinear and marginal notes in
anAfrican language. Scribe: Abu Bakr ... (last leaf).
Abu `Abd Allah Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Sanusi (d.892/1486), Possibly al-Sanusi's Umm al-barahin or his al-`Akida al-Kubra Fully vocalised, fair West African Maghribi, with
interlinearand marginal notes in an African language. From f.17b to the end, the text is mostly in an African language, with occasional Arabic quotations. There appears to be a leaf or more missing between f.1 and f.2.
Muhammad b. `Umar b. Abi Muhli (f.1b), Kitab Ibn `Umar Kubra A work of `aka'id and Maliki fikh. Interlinear and marginal notes in Arabic and in anAfrican
language; vocalised. Frequent reference is made to the work of al-Sanusi: presumably to `Akidat ahl al-tauhid ... commonly called al-`Akida al-Kubra by Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Sanusi(d.
c.892/1486) and its commentary (Sharh) by the author himself, entitled `Umdat ahl al-taufik wa 'l-ta`did. There is frequent mention of Kahlil b. Ishak al- Jundi (d. 767/1365) author ofthe
famous Maliki work of fikh, al-Muhtasar. Other writers mentioned include `Iyad al-Yahsubi (d.544/1149) and `Abd al-Wahhab al-Sha`rawi (d.973/1656), who wereboth
Malikites.

The first portion of the grammatical work by Birgivi Mehmet,
Izḥār al-asrār, corresponding to p.34-41 line 12 of the Izhar printed (p.34-64) with Ibn al-Hajib's
al-Kafiya, Istanbul ed. of `Abd al-Rahim (1234 A. H.) The manuscript is in the
neathand of Antoine Isaac, Baron Silvestre de Sacy, the 19th century French orientalist. It is unvocalised and only partly furnished with diacritical marks. In the margin are occasional numbers, presumably marking lines on the manuscript from which
hecopied. The first is 10 (opposite de Sacy's second line), the last is 100 (opposite the 3rd line from the end). The writing stops in the middle of f.4a in the middle of a subject.

Mu`rib al-izhar (Üsküdar, 1218 A.H.) bought 1956 from Kegan Paul. This had come from the library assembled by Ferrao de Castelbranco, a Portugese nobleman who was a pupil of Silvestre de Sacy and had acquired it
fromhis library.

Qasidat al-Burda by al-Busairi. Manuscript poem about the love of Mohamed, in a fine script. This copy was written in 1507/1508, by a calligrapher called Ali Bin Mirza Muhammad Bin Qurman (the name Mirza suggests
thathe was probably Iranian). It also has the stamp and name of somebody who owned it later, probably in the 18/19th century.

Gulistān or
Golestān, meaning “Rose Garden”, is a collection of moralistic and didactic verse and prose in eight chapters. This manuscript is in an excellent condition, written in gold,
blue and red. Fine pair of full page 'unwans at first opening. Written in a fine nastalik script, 15 lines to the page, in double gold ruled frames, within blue frames. 9 full page and one half page miniatures, some are damaged, in some cases the
faces are deliberately scratched out. A fine copy, owner's seal on the f.1a.

Toḥfat al-aḥrār تحفه الاحرار (‘Gift of the Free’ - literature, poetry, moral themes and anecdote) and
Sobḥat al-abrār سبحه الابرار (‘Rosary of the Pious’ about the principals of Sufism),
the third and fourth of his series of seven masnavis
Haft Aurang.
Colophon states that this was copied “in the course of the months of the year eight hundred and eighty and” (the scribe has forgotten to add the last digit of the year). Fair Nastalik script, titles in red and frames are in red , gold and
blue.The first leaf is a supply leaf, although very old, with the beginning of
Toḥfat al-aḥrār, but the beginning of
Sobḥat al-abrār is missing from the margin, where it would have been in the original.

Divan. Some pages from start and end of the manuscript are missing (no colophon present or identification of the date of writing or scribe. In a good nastalik hand, with some variants noted in red in the margin, along
with verses in Hebrew in a Judaeo-Persian hand, as well as later notes.
Two handwritten notes in English in two separate papers: one introduces the poet; the second, on pink paper, works as a bookmark and shows where qasidas finish and other forms, such as quatrain, start. A seal and some words in the flyleaf
suggests the manuscript belonged to (Hakim) Salām Ibrāhim Ali, dated 1288AH ( 1871 AD), 17 years after the poet’s death. A seal in the middle of the book, bust of a man or woman, inscription is not clear, approximately شوم فدایت
First line,
which is a line from the middle of qasida, in praise of the Prophet Muhammad. مقتول را ز قاتل باطل بود قصاص مظلوم را زظالم لازم بود جفا Last Line شد قافله عمر و تو وامانده به دنبال بشتاب مگر لاشه به منزل برسانی "

that the owner had bought the book for 7 Rupie, so perhaps the book was purchesd in India. Lahiji, was a 17th c. theologian and poet. He lived mostly in city of Qom, He was a pupil of Mollā Sadrā Shirazi(d.1641 AD), a well-known philosopher and
dedicated this book to Shah Abbās II (d.1666 AD)
