H.C. Ferens

Service papers used by Henry Cecil Ferens (1899-1975), a Durham City solicitor, and Durham diocesan registrar and legal secretary to the bishop of Durham, (some endorsed with his name), acquired in the course of his duties attending at these services. He was a partner in the H.E. Ferens firm of solicitors at 38 Saddler St, Durham. He was also active in the governance of Durham, being an alderman and serving as mayor, and clerk to the City of Durham Freemen. He received an honorary DCL from Durham University in 1960 and served as vice-chairman of its Council and solicitor to St Chad's College. He lived at Fernhill, Crossgate Moor, Durham.

Contents

Service papers mostly for the collation, institution, induction and licensing of clergy in the diocese of Durham, also for the admission of curates. There are also small groups of service papers for ordinations, consecrations etc of bishops of Durham and Jarrow etc, and consercations of new churches and burial grounds etc.
