Contents

Manuscript and printed items, with a handful of photographs, covering a broad range of subjects relating to the history of Ushaw College, including teaching, administration, college jubilees/special events, and other aspects of college life. The collection is particularly strong on the events leading up to, and the negotiations behind, the establishment of the college in 1808. A number of documents cover the college's long and protracted disputes with the bishops and the attempts by the latter to secure greater control over the running of the college during the mid-nineteenth century. Other items highlight the strong bond between the Holy See and the college, particularly the establishment of confraternities and the conferring of privileges.

Previous custodial history

The origins of this artificial collection remain unknown but it is likely that a previous librarian made a systematic attempt to compile important items on the history of the college in a similar style to the Ushaw Collection of Manuscripts (UCM).

Conditions of access

Open for consultation.

Copyright and copying

Permission to make any published use of the photocopied material from the collection must be sought in advance from pg.library@durham.ac.uk and, where appropriate, from Lancashire Record Office (the copyright owner). The Library will assist where possible with identifying copyright owners, but responsibility for ensuring copyright clearance rests with the user of the material.
Manuscripts deemed important to the history of the college are occasionally added to this collection
